About Allison

Hi! My name is Allison! I am a certified teacher with 10 years of teaching experience in the public school system. I have a graduate degree in education and a bachelors degree in Journalism/English. My teaching experience is very diversified. I have been a "learning resource teacher" meaning that I have experience teaching students that either rank above or below their average grade level. This required me to really get to know each individual learner, their strengths and weaknesses, and to very carefully construct a curriculum that they specifically would most benefit from.

In addition to working with small groups, I have also been a classroom teacher for 8 years. Because my certification is K-12 (which is a very rare certification), I have taught 7th grade math (pre-Algebra), kindergarten and high school English. I have extensive experience teaching reading, writing, speaking and literature. The ability levels of students I have worked with ranges from students who are pre-phonetic "readers" and "writers" through gifted/advanced high school English students. Additionally, I also have experience tutoring and teaching middle school math as indicated above.

As a kindergarten teacher, I was in charge of the identification and evaluation of several special needs students. Therefore, I was not only responsible for implementing accommodations for these students, but quite often helping the school psychologist develop individualized educational plans for newly identified kindergarteners. Also, due to the fact that I had these students in class all day, accommodations were required in several types settings and transitions. I have implemented numerous intervention curricula, including SPIRE, Handwriting Without Tears and Fundations, depending on the specific needs of each student.

My first year as a high school English teacher, I was recognized as the "Rookie of the Year" award by my principal and evaluated as being "highly effective" on the teacher evaluation scale. According to the IL board of Ed. I am also highly qualified to teach high school English. This past year, I was very successful, especially when differentiating instruction. When working with certain academically challenged students, I have differentiated by modifying assignments and lesson objectives. These students need more steps than other students to be able to meet certain lesson goals and objectives. Therefore, for example, when my classes were writing argumentative essays this semester, I scaffolded the activity for these students by building in additional steps to help them. Graphic organizers guided them through the steps necessary to obtain their research and correctly cite sources. They were also given a detailed outline to help them create and organize the necessary components of the essay and each respective paragraph. With the incorporation of extra steps and support activities, these students have been able to meet classroom objectives and be successful in my class.

My undergraduate degree in Journalism provided me extensive experience in critical reading, researching and writing. My personal experiences in English and Journalism translated well to my teaching career because as a high school English teacher the skills that were most emphasized in state and common core standards pertained to reading, writing and critical thinking. Some of the more specific types of writing types I've taught include narratives, research papers, argumentative and expository essays, poetry, literary analyses using appropriate text to support assertions. I have experience teaching common literary devices such as imagery, personification, metaphor, use of diction. I've also taught reading skills including vocabulary, decoding, comprehension, fluency and use of context clues.

Additionally, I have worked closely in a professional learning community to create and implement a common curriculum, with specific focus on summative and formative assignments/ assessments and used these results to drive subsequent planning and instruction.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified teacher with 10 years of teaching experience in the public school system. My teaching certification is K-12. I have been an elementary "learning resource teacher," meaning that I have experience teaching students (grades K-6) that either rank above or below their average grade level. This required me to really get to know each individual learner, their strengths and weaknesses, and to very carefully construct a curriculum that they specifically would most benefit from.

In addition to working with small groups, I have also been a classroom teacher for 8 years. Because my certification is K-12 (which is a very rare certification), I have taught 6th and 7th grade math (prealgebra), kindergarten and high school English.

Handwriting

I have worked as an elementary school resource teacher. This job consisted primarily of working with special needs students, either one-on-one or in very small group settings. The majority of students I worked with, ranging from kindergarten through 5th grade, were special needs students. I implemented numerous intervention curricula, including SPIRE, Handwriting Without Tears and Fundations, depending on the specific needs of each student. As a kindergarten teacher I taught phonics, D'Nealion print handwriting, all letters, capital and lowercase, and numbers. I also taught sentence writing and punctuation and taught pre-phonetic readers to be able to recognize and write their own name.

Phonics

I worked as a kindergarten teacher at Elsie Rogers Elementary from 2009-2012 in the Penn Harris Madison School Corporation in Mishawaka, IN. I implemented focused instruction to over 25 students in all core content areas, and identified and implemented tier 2 and 3 intervention strategies for struggling learners, including bi-weekly progress monitoring. I obtained recognition for having over 80% of students make growth on NWEA non-traditional standardized testing. I have used numerous phonics programs to teach students to identify letter sounds including SPIRE, Fundations and Dibels testing.

Public Speaking

My undergraduate degree in Journalism provided me extensive experience in critical reading, researching, speaking and writing. My personal experiences in English and Journalism translated well to my teaching career because as a high school English teacher the skills that were most emphasize in state and common core standards pertained to reading, writing, public speaking and critical thinking. Some of the more specific types of speaking assignments I have created and taught include personal narrative presentation, general public speaking (clarity and projection), writing and presenting certain speech formats including "how-to" and argumentative speeches. Creation and presentation of literary analysis using props (such as Prezi presentations and power point presentations) to support speeches. I have organized students into Socratic seminar groupings and required them to write and then independently present thoughts and ideas concerning a specific topic or issue. I have also required students to collaboratively present their responses to assigned topics, issues, ethical dilemmas, etc.

Reading

I have taught high school English and am "highly qualified" in the state of IL (teaching license) to teach English.

Web Design

I've completed courses through General Assembly on Dash, Codecademy and Code School on HTML, web development and web design. Through these classes I was required to create a personal website and a business website for a restaurant. I have used HTML, CSS and JavaScript to create well-designed, interactive and responsive websites.
