Marquette University (History)
I am an experienced educator with more than five years of teaching and tutoring experience in social studies, language arts, academic literacy, and standardized testing preparation. I have taught adults and high school student in private schools and the Chicago Public Schools. I am an energetic and passionate teacher who breaks down complicated topics in an engaging manner while encouraging students to think critically and out of the box.
I have tutored students at Juarez high school where over 90% of my students scored an 80% or better on the United States Constitution exam. In my current capacity as an ESL instructor the majority of my students have made gains in reading and writing on standardized tests. I have designed and taught a unit explaining the presidential election process that culminated in the staging of vice-presidential and presidential debates modeled after televised presidential debates. This unit taught students how to stay abreast of political issues of international and national significance, craft thoughtful questions and answers, evaluate the American political process, and to become engaged voters. The students took this lesson and ran with it. I have also taught world business topics to an international audience where we the class has evaluated and discussed international economic and political trends. My backgrounds in literature and history have allowed me to create cross curricular units and field experiences.
I have more than five years of teaching ESL and English literature and composition to adults and high school students. I've taught grammar, writing, reading, listening, test preparation, and conversation to students of all levels. I studied English literature and do freelance writing for a living.
I studied history and am passionate about politics. I've taught American government and my students have a high success rate on the state and federal constitution exams. I'm good at blending literature and history. I also make history relevant and engaging; I don't just force students to know names and dates.
I'm passionate about helping my students succeed not just in the subject we're covering but in real life. I'm very patient and flexible. I also have a sense of humor. I'll keep you engaged. I look forward to working with you soon. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
