I love learning and I love teaching. I worked as a research scientist at the University of Chicago for twenty years. At the age of 40, I decided on a career change and became a speech-language pathologist and special education teacher. I have taught reading, language arts, math and science to middle school students (grades 5 through 8) with learning disabilities for over 15 years. I have also taught English as a second language students. I have a M.S. in Biology, a M.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders, a M.A. in Teaching (Differentiated Education) and and M.A. in Teaching (TOESL, English as a Second Language). I hold a professional teaching license in the state Illinois and am a licensed speech-language pathologist in the states of Illinois and Indiana. In my classroom I teach individual students as well as groups of up to 15 students. I enjoy tailoring lessons to individual students. It is important to know where a student's understanding is breaking down and try to repair it immediately. I am always thrilled when I watch a student have that "ah ha" moment.

Hands on activities are an important part of my teaching. In science, I plan simple activities and experiments for students. In language arts, I encourage students to write stories, plays and poems in order to apply grammar and vocabulary. Visuals such as pictures, diagrams and videos are useful to all students and in particular benefit English as a second language learners. I want my students to understand how and where to find information that they don't know and to be able to put together what they know and what they've learned to problem solve not only in school but also in life.

I have a B.S. and an M.S. in Biological Sciences from the University of Chicago. I worked in scientific research for a number of years. I love learning about how living things develop, grow and interact in our world. Teaching with demonstrations and simple experiments is fun! The Illinois State Board of Education considers me highly qualified to teach middle school science.

I have a M.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders and have taught Language Arts to middle school students (grades 5 through 8) with learning disabilities and communication delays for over 15 years. I have also taught English as a second language to adults and have a M.A. in TOESL.

For over 15 years, as a special educator and speech-language pathologist, I have worked with many students who have Aspergers, autism and ADHD. Most of my continuing education classes to maintain my license focus on these areas. In order to help these students see the world through other people's eyes, I have really struggled to appreciate what it is like to live in an Aspy/autistic world. When I work with these students, my goal isn't to change them, but to help them accept that life is a lot better if we all learn to tolerate one another's quirks and idiosyncrasies.

I am available for tutoring from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. weekdays and have flexible weekend hours during the school year. My availability during the week increases during the summer. My rate is $65 per hour. I look forward to hearing from you and helping you reach that "ah ha" moment!
