As a music teacher, I believe the challenge and joy of performing music is enhanced by an understanding of its underlying principles. I have taught music to students as young as preschool and as old as high school, and I have found something to love about every age! I look forward to helping even more students reach their full potential for higher music learning.
Students interested in pursuing music at a four-year college or even in a high school AP course will need a basic knowledge of music theory, including chord structures, rhythmic patterns, common progressions, and scale modifications. Most programs also incorporate elements of ear training, sight singing, and history into their music courseload. As a music education graduate of a small liberal arts program, I have ample experience in each of these areas.
After taking a music seminar class in high school, I was able to gain credit to bypass the first semester of music theory, ear training, and history upon entering my freshman year of college. My music education degree required me to pass over 25 hours of theory, history, and ear training. Currently, I hold positions teaching middle school choir and high school madrigal ensembles, as well as elementary and early childhood general music. I have also studied private voice for over 10 years and perform regularly in local theatre and with a cover band.
Due to a busy teaching and performance schedule, I do require 24 hours notice before cancellation of any session; however, I am willing to reschedule as my calendar will allow.
I prefer to meet in libraries or other public places in the case of theory/history jobs, but I am willing to come to a student's house for voice and ear training/sight singing appointments.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have experience teaching ear training to high school and middle school students in both of my current jobs.

I did well enough on my college placement exams to test out of my first quarter of freshman music theory.
