DePaul University (Theatre Arts)
I am a published graphic novelist, illustrator, and painter. I'm self-taught and have loved drawing, telling stories, and being creative ever since I was a kid. I believe that everyone can be an artist if they have the drive and passion to practice. As a teaching artist, I want my students to feel comfortable enough to explore their imaginations, express themselves freely, make mistakes, get messy, and keep trying! I specialize in cartooning and comics, as well as zine-making (so I can also pass on some very basic book binding skills to those who are interested!) I also enjoy general illustration, working in more realistic styles, and acrylic painting.
As a freelance teaching artist, I have taught students of all experience levels from variety of age groups. I prefer teaching students between the ages of 11-17 and have done so in a variety of ASM programs throughout the city of Chicago over the past two years. I am always eager to pass along on my own drawing and painting tips and tricks to those who are hoping to develop their skills. But I also know that art making goes beyond technical skills--creative vision and imagination are the magic key! I am always happy to let students with strong visions run with their ideas and steer the direction of the work, while providing them with tips and constructive feedback. For students who are less sure about what direction they want to go in creatively, I am always happy to provide prompts and guidance to help them develop their ideas and foster creativity. At the end of the day, it is extremely important to me that each student's voice is able to come through in their work, no matter what the medium.
I'm a published graphic novelist, painter, illustrator, and cartoonist. My graphic novel was nominated and short-listed for a book award in 2015.
I always love the opportunity to help students grow creatively and foster their artistic skills. If you are interested in lessons, please reach out and let me know what you (or your child) are hoping to achieve, and your artistic goals! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a published graphic novelist, I wrote and illustrated the graphic novel Baddawi (Just World Books, 2015) which was nominated and short-listed for the Palestine Book Awards in 2015. I have exhibited my comics and illustrations at a number of comics festivals around the world from Beirut to Detroit, and also have some upcoming exhibitions (not yet publicly announced).
I have taught drawing, comics writing, and zine making in a variety of After School programs administered by the city of Chicago.
I have experience in painting (acrylic) and have done so as a hobby for years, but have also been commissioned to paint backdrops, props, and sets for Free Street Theatre and Redmoon Theatre in Chicago, IL. I am self-taught.
