Northeastern Illinois University (English Education)
As a former CPS high school English teacher my idea of success came when a senior told me the first book he'd ever read from cover to cover was in my classroom. Another student, after much modeling to read between the lines, said they had really gotten to know, understand and question the author as well as the characters.
Establishing a trusting relationship with the student as well as being able to focus on the area(s) needing improvement be it content specific, general organization or motivation is the way I like to tutor. I believe setting the bar high with clear goals and expectations can make for a successful tutoring session and positive academic outcome.
Although I was an English teacher I have always loved math. Algebra and geometry are fun subjects with plenty of real world applications to help students feel the value of what they are learning.
I studied Spanish in high school and as an exchange student lived in Spain for a summer. Throughout my adult careers I have continued to use Spanish and have traveled to several Spanish speaking countries utilizing the language.
I love literature and the ability to travel or have a range of emotions and experiences by just opening a book. The complexities of language are wonderful when students discover them and begin to use them. Students utilize literary devices without knowing it. Giving them the vocabulary and freedom to gain a deeper understanding of literature and improved writing skills will benefit them for years to come.
If you are seeking a down to earth dedicated person who is willing to go the extra mile I am the right tutor for you. I've traveled extensively, enjoy culture, food and helping people. Let's get started on small projects or long-term goals. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
