About Daniel

Hello,

I am currently a graduate student at the University of Illinois at Chicago, studying Early Childhood Education. I plan to get my teaching license through this program, with an endorsement in Early Childhood Special Education. As an undergraduate, I studied Anthropology, winning the Outstanding Senior Thesis Award. I have minors in East Asian Studies and Business Administration. I also studied abroad in Japan for a school year, studying anthropology, religion, business, and Japanese.

In my spare time I like to play guitar and write music. I also spend my time playing board games, video games, watching movies/TV, going out to eat, going to museums, doing touristy things like mini-golf, etc... One of my greatest interests is travel, and in relation, culture. I hope to teach internationally someday in countries across the world, finally settling in Japan, where I long to return.

I do not have official paid or recorded tutor or teacher experience. However, I have experience tutoring or helping students in various ways. In my first two years of college, I assisted a number of international students as a member of the International House at Illinois State University. Then in Japan, I served as a speaking partner to four different Japanese college students. Most of these experiences were in ESL. However, I have also tutored fellow students in Anthropology.

Lastly, I have taught guitar to a number of friends, family, and others in my own way. I do not read music, nor do I know much theory. However, I have success introducing others to the instrument in a way that doesn't lead them straight to boredom. I can help you by starting you off with simple, single-string songs, that are fun to play, sound good, and help you develop. I think for many people the problem they have is how boring theory and reading are. If you instead play simple songs that sound good, like Seven Nation Army or Smoke on the Water, you will have fun, which in turn will lead you to developing your speed and skill. Once you have a good command of single strings, we can move on to chords. And from there, you can move on to whatever you want, including theory and reading.

My undergraduate degree was in anthropology, and I have a minor in East Asian Studies. I won the Outstanding Senior Thesis Award for my senior thesis. Further, I studied abroad in Japan and studied anthropology and religion while there.

As a member of the International House at Illinois State University, I tutored many international students in English. I continued this with Japanese students during my study abroad in Japan.

I am currently completing my Master's in Early Childhood Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

I have been playing guitar, self-taught (no theory/reading), for about 7 years. I have played in a few short lived bands, and I often write music.

Please contact me if any of my subjects/qualifications/experiences are relevant to your interests. I am glad to help all with whatever their needs are, and I will try my best to accommodate you. I want to be as flexible as possible with hour and locations, so don't hesitate to contact me regardless of your schedule. Thanks.
