About Derrick

I am a recent graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, with a degree in Music Education. I have been playing clarinet and saxophones since 2001, and have been tutoring since 2012.

As a young musician, I strive to let music play an important role in people's lives, no matter what that role may be. Whether it is a career choice or a pastime hobby, everyone can find importance and positivity in music.

I seek to find strengths and weaknesses in my student's abilities in order to recognize where they are, and help them grow. Going outside of the box is something that I strive for when teaching music by using various different methods of teaching/performance and having the option of creating my own exercises that will fear towards the students' personal skills/accommodations. Not only will the sessions be geared towards student enhancement, they will encourage enjoyment in the musical process.

Not only will these lessons be beneficial to your playing and musical abilities, these lessons should be and will be enjoyable, keeping your interest constant and thriving. I am flexible in scheduling and will work around your schedule!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Clarinet

I have been an active clarinetist since the year 2000. I have played in bands on clarinet all throughout high school, college, and have gone on European Tours playing clarinet based on merit and performance. I have been teaching clarinet lessons specifically to grades 4-10 since 2012, privately and semi-privately.

Ear Training

I have an exceptional knowledge of tonal and contemporary harmony backed up with various teaching methods in order to explain music to a wide variety of students on different abilities. Functional on piano, I am able to allow my students to see and hear the harmonies, melodies, and pitches for practical study. Using my "Perfect Pitch" as a teaching tool, I can challenge students to listen for pitches, sound structures, and functions with the intend of growth and musical enjoyment.

Flute

I have been playing flute since 2012 as a college student. After my studies at Berklee, I assisted middle school and high school students in flute studies by providing private and semi private lessons during and outside of class. I have an understanding of scales, embochure, breath support, and proper sound that I can teach students in order for them to gain understanding in their instrument.

Music Theory

I have been studying music theory since 2007 after taking AP Music Theory in High School. I have helped students in and out of school with theory homework and misc theory help. Using the knowledge and teaching tools I have acquired as a student at Berklee College of Music, I am able to teach theory in a variety of methods geared towards a variety of musical goals and objectives.

Saxophone

I am an active/current professional saxophonist. I started in 2005 and have intensely studied saxophone throughout high school and college at Berklee College of Music. I have been publicly performing on saxophone in various bands since 2010, and I have also taught saxophone to both youth and adults since 2013.
