About Ian

I grew up in a musical family and have been studying guitar intensely most of my adult life. I started teaching in 2001 and realized then that it was my calling. I've been teaching ever since in several music stores, schools and park districts to hundreds of students of all ages and levels. I love seeing people learn- even if it's just a little at at time.
As a side note, from 2006 to 2015 I owned and ran a music venue that was open to all ages. It was also a recording studio in the day. There I hosted events with bands from all over the world. I knew I was doing something right when I started to see my own students from the past come in to record albums with their bands or perform shows on our stage.

I've studied every genre- classical, jazz, blues, rock, metal etc. I've been teaching for over 13 years in music stores, schools and park districts and at most locations I have become the top requested teacher. I believe the two most important qualities that make me a great teacher are open-mindedness and patience. No music is bad to me. If someone is excited to learn, I'm excited. It doesn't matter if they are 5 or 90.

All of my lessons are geared towards the student. If you just want to have fun. I can do that. If you want to get super serious and study hard, I can do that too. If you just want to learn songs, that's fine. If you want me to guide the lesson? We'll do a good combo of all of those things. You won't be disappointed.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Guitar

Well other than studying/playing guitar (and bass and ukulele) for over 23 years, I've been teaching professionally for over 13 years in music stores, schools and park districts. I have taught all aspects of music including theory, technique and songwriting to hundreds of children and adults of all levels.

Songwriting

I started writing music 20 years ago. I grew up in a musical family where instead of watching television, my father had me analyze song structures and lyrics. I've gone on to write full albums of songs for several gigging Chicago bands. I've incorporated songwriting into my guitar/bass/ukulele lessons as well. We study song structure, scale and chord theory, and how to tweak and edit a song until it's just right. Any genre- pop, blues, metal, country, etc.
