About Alisha

I have experience as an elementary school teacher and mental health counselor. I incorporate my knowledge in psychology into my instruction, taking into consideration each student's personality type, learning style, and personal history in order to customize my approach. Individualizing my instruction allows the student to receive a quality learning experience catered to their specific needs.

My overall goal with all students I work with is to help them discover their strengths, become more self-aware, balance their school lives, and work towards achieving ultimate fulfillment within themselves as students in a highly competitive academic world. If these are all in place there are absolutely no limits to what they can achieve in life! As a mother of two boys I know how important it is to want your children to be more than equipped and prepared to succeed academically! I am here to assist parents and their child/children with this process.

Let's get started on your journey towards academic success! I am excited to start working with you! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a BA in early childhood education, and taught 1st and 2nd grades in the Chicago Public School system. I also ran a non profit tutoring program for 2 years for ages 7-18. I have extensive knowledge and experience in instructing and tutoring the elementary-aged student.

Handwriting

I have a BA in early childhood education. I student taught at the kindergarten level for one year. I taught both 1st and 2nd grade in the Chicago Public School System for 3 years. I also taught preschool for 3 years. Every experience with teaching, I implemented handwriting skills into my instruction.

Phonics

I have a BA in early childhood education. I taught 1st and 2nd grades in the Chicago Public School System. I taught phonemic awareness, letter recognition, and various other literacy skills to students in the beginning stages of learning. I also ran a nonprofit tutoring program to students aged 7-18, and worked closely with students on phonics and literacy skills because many of them were just learning these basic skills and needed additional assistance outside of school.

Study Skills

As an elementary school teacher, I ran after school programs where we focused on study skills. I assisted the students with their homework, as well as helped them with finding creative ways to recall information they needed for an upcoming quiz or exam. I also began the process of studying for the ISAT exam with my 2nd graders as they approached 3rd grade.
