I love to teach and working one-on-one with a students allows me to prepare a curriculum that is specifically tailored to their needs and educational levels. I am a performance artist and have been teaching creative writing and public speaking for over 15 years.
In 2014, I obtained my TEFL Certification from the International TEFL Academy in Chicago with the intent of teaching English in Asia and South America. I completed 150 hours of training which included modules for Teaching Young Learners, Business English, and a 20-hour classroom practicum. I discovered the multi-ethnic community of Albany Park Chicago and was able to first volunteer then join the teaching staff at Albany Park Community Center. I worked with students from Pakistan, Vietnam, Chile, Mexico, Ecuador and India. As an ESL Level 1 instructor, I was able to help my students meet and exceed level gains for the CASAS National Adult Education Assessment Tests.
I am a life long learner and believe education should be practical, engaging, and interactive. I also recognize that our society is assessment driven and therefore I paid special attention to teaching successful test taking strategies. My goal is to support immigrant students in acquiring both written and verbal English language skills and to harness the practical everyday application of those skills so that they may successfully acclimate to the culture.
As a teacher it is important to create lessons that incorporate the kinesthetic, auditory, written, and visual modalities so that students may better grasp information. As an teaching artist, I have facilitated hundreds of workshops for youth and adults. I am personable, good natured, and strive for excellence. I believe a quality educational experience requires good communication and an inherent respect for the capacity for all people to learn.
I am dedicated to helping people acquire the English tools they need to succeed. If you are looking for a tutor who will make learning interactive, relevant and engaging I am available Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at the Chicago Cultural Center or Columbia College Library between 10 AM-6 PM. I am also willing to meet at your local public library. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
