About Lily

Hi, I'm Lily!

I'm a post-baccalaureate research fellow working at the Feinberg School of Medicine, with plans to attend medical school next year. I spent three of my undergraduate years serving as a Chemistry Department tutor, and I also tutored math through the Athletic Department's tutoring program. I was also and assistant instructor in the Chemistry and Biology Departments for introductory courses. In short - I've worked with a wide range of students, from those who merely wanted to make it through the course as painlessly as possible to those who wanted to boost their grades to be competitive for medical/dental/nursing school.

I want my students to feel better about the subject by the end of the session. If for whatever reason you're not satisfied, I don't feel comfortable being paid.

It took me a while to realize I was good at math - and even longer to realize I liked it. This is because math does not come naturally to me, and I have to work at it like anything else.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Organic Chemistry

In college, I was a chemistry major and had the pleasure of taking Organic Chemistry 1 and 2, as well as two honors-level labs. The lectures involved common mechanisms and reaction pathways, whereas the labs focused on lab techniques and the use of spectroscopy as a means of compound characterization. I received top grades and truly enjoyed these courses. I was selected as a tutor for my university's chemistry department and worked with students individually or in small groups. My exact methods depend on the student, but generally I like to work through problems together, since I think repetition and exposure to a wide-range of possible questions is the best way to study organic chemistry. My students were all very satisfied with their improvement and I was asked to be a tutor for the last 2.5 years of undergrad. Lastly, I worked in a lab in undergrad that did some organic chemistry, which only deepened my appreciation and understanding of the subject.
