About Lauren

Bio

Hi, I'm Lauren. I've been a photographer and mentor for the majority of my life. I have informally taught photography to children, youth, and adults alike. I am very active in my community and believe that the cultivation of the arts is necessary for a community to grow and express itself. I would love to be able to support my volunteering efforts by getting paid to do what I love, for those who are able to pay for tutelage. I am highly creative and articulate. I enjoy traveling, music, art, fire-spinning, and having meaningful conversations.

Formally, I received a portfolio-based scholarship at Highland Community College and continued on to complete my BFA in Photography at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) in 2010.

I am very good at explaining both concepts and technical information so it seems simple and intuitive. I have an extensive professional history in the digital production industry (8+ years). The industry is fast-paced and has a high learning curve. I have many times had to teach myself how to use programs from scratch, in addition to troubleshooting on my own as well. I have an expert understanding of Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. I use these two programs almost every day. I also use Adobe InDesign and Illustrator frequently. I would say I have an advanced understanding of these two programs.

I am highly knowledgeable in nearly all aspects of photography: film photography (35mm, 120mm, & 4x5 format), digital photography, post-production, studio lighting, artistic technique (developing the "eye"), technical aspects (calculating proper exposure), fine art style, conceptual photography, dark room techniques (including Ansel Adam's "zone system"), negative scanning and touch ups, Lightroom, Photoshop, etc... you name it. I desire to constantly be learning about my art and work.

At the community college I attended, my focus was Graphic design, with Photography as a minor. At the time, I thought pursuing photography as a career would stifle my love for the art form, but I changed my mind when I began my BFA at UIC, where I dove into photography as my main focus with women's studies and graphic design as areas of emphasis. I have a portfolio site for my conceptual work, as well as a blog for my vintage camera photography, which I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post here. Feel free to ask me for the links.

I get along with all types of people, from all backgrounds. I am well-traveled and have lots of photo adventure stories to share from my life experiences. I am very passionate about what I do, so have confidence that I will give 100% of my time and energy to you when we are in a tutoring session.

Adobe InDesign,

Adobe InDesign

I majored in graphic design while working towards my Associates degree. I later got my BFA in photography at UIC, but with a strong emphasis on graphic design. While at UIC, I was a work study at the UIC graphic design lab. I have had 8+ years experience in the digital production industry, much of which requires strong graphic design skills as well as their translation into printed materials. InDesign was probably the program I used most while designing and outputting materials for these jobs. I have designed materials for many of the organizations I have worked for, as well as self-designing my own website since high school, in ever evolving formats. I have also designed logos and business cards for a handful of local businesses. For the majority of this work I have used InDesign and Illustrator.
Adobe Lightroom,

Adobe Lightroom

I have been using Lightroom every day in my photography work for over 7 years now, having switched from using Photoshop previously. The amount of time a person can save by using Lightroom is astonishing! I still use photoshop for some edits, but Lightroom handles 95% of my professional photo editing. I have tutored photographers and students of all skill levels, ages, and backgrounds. I specialize in helping create efficient workflows that cater to one's personal workflow preferences. I have also helped many individuals in emergency situations straightening up messy (often chaotic) Lightroom catalogs and in helping find missing images. It can be quite intimidating and tricky to wrap your head around Lightroom because it is set up quite differently than the other Adobe programs, but once you understand a few basic concepts, it is very intuitive.
Adobe Photoshop,

Adobe Photoshop

I have been using Photoshop for over a decade, in my own photography work. I use this program almost every day for basic and complex work. I have tutored many people in using this program.

Photography

I am a professional photographer with 15 years of experience. I started working as a photographer in high school taking photos of my friends for their senior pictures, then over the next few years I expanded from senior photos to higher end portraits and weddings. I have mentored younger aspiring artists and photographers since high school as well, in 4H club as well as through my spiritual community. I continue to mentor youth in my current neighborhood, and I find myself always helping new and experienced photographers better understand their craft. I love teaching, but see it more as a collaboration. I am constantly learning and sharing my learning with everyone I meet.

Patient and Knowledgeable

Lauren's good counsel and workflow techniques are of great assistance. As a veteran of Adobe products, Lauren cuts directly to the issue and just as importantly, explains it all in simple terms. She is my go-to pro when I have any questions

Lauren helped intergrate files in Lightroom/PhotoShop.

Lauren helped me how to find and reorganize my photo files among the different versions of PhotoShop (Elements, CS3, CS6 and now ClassicCC) and LightRoom, while I was trying to clean up an older computer. Without her help, I might have lost raw photo files from some very important and memorable travels. Thanks!!

Review for Lauren H.

Lauren helped me go over the basic features of Lightroom - crash course style which was very informative and helpful! I would definitely highly recommend Lauren! she makes things very clear in short amount of time, which is what I needed. I hope to work with her in the future. Lauren was my first choice from the list of the tutors for Lightroom - and I must say I did a great pick!

Accessible, knowledgeable & patient!

Lauren helped me with a Lightroom issue around a 35mm scan project I'm working on. I was completely stuck and she patiently helped me find the solution. She also gave me a few tips for the project in general. I'm certain to be reaching out to her again soon.

Patient and knowledgable Lauren

Lauren guided me through organizing photos on Lightroom. I need another session with her, since LR seems to have a mind of its own, but I have faith that Lauren will help me figure it all out, and I can be a star student in my photography class!
