About Matthew

I scored very highly on the SAT and graduated from Yale in 2015 with a degree in Political Science, which involved a ton of writing. I'm very confident in my ability to edit documents and help students improve their writing skills.

Currently, I work as a legal assistant at an environmental law firm, where I put my proofreading, editing, and writing skills to practice every day. My previous job was as an AmeriCorps member working for City Year, where I served in a 9th grade English/Language Arts classroom. I excelled as a small group teacher in this capacity, and am a great tutor because of my experience.

I helped a co-worker with her personal statement for graduate school, and she was accepted to the University of Houston's graduate school of social work with my help. I also helped my girlfriend with her personal statement for her Masters in Education grad school applications, and she was recently accepted to Columbia's Teachers College. I'm very good at what I do.

Please feel free to email me if you are interested in scheduling lessons. I'm ready and prepared to help!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

While I believe I have a strong understanding of English, I also have benefited by learning from excellent English teachers in high school and brilliant English professors in college. The short stories, novels, and writing assignments have piled up since high school, and I am confident that I can help students thrive in their own English classes.

Grammar

I currently support a 9th grade English/Language Arts teacher in her classroom, as an AmeriCorps Member for City Year. I scored a 5 out of a possible 5 points on the AP English Language and Composition exam. I scored a 780 out of a possible 800 points on the Writing portion of the SAT.

Proofreading

I graduated from Yale University in 2015 with a degree in political science. My degree required that I write many papers, including a thesis on an original idea during my senior year. The experience of writing and revising hundreds of pages worth of papers during undergraduate life formed the foundation of my strong proofreading skills. Following college, I taught in a 9th grade English Language Arts classroom while working for City Year, an educational non-profit AmeriCorps program. I applied my proofreading capabilities in this space, editing papers and giving feedback to over 100 students over the course of an entire school year. During that time, I joined Wyzant and have proofread a multitude of essays, whether for class, for college entrance, or for other applications.

Reading

I scored 800 out of a possible 800 points on the Critical section of the SAT. I am capable of reading and comprehending texts at high speeds.

SAT Math

I scored a 760 on the SAT Math section when I was in high school and was an SAT tutor in conjunction with an SAT prep program at my high school.

SAT Reading

- I volunteered as a tutor for both the SAT and PSAT in conjunction with a preparatory program at my high school.

- I scored 800 out of a possible 800 points on the Critical section of the SAT.

SAT Writing

- I volunteered as a tutor for both the SAT and PSAT in conjunction with a preparatory program at my high school.

- I scored 780 out of a possible 800 points on the Writing section of the SAT.

Vocabulary

I took Advanced Placement English Literature and Advanced Placement English Language and Composition, and scored a 5 out of 5 on each exam. I scored an 800 on the SAT Critical Reading Section, scored a 780 on the SAT Writing Section, and was an SAT tutor in conjunction with an SAT prep program at my high school.

Writing

I have always been a strong writer, and I have always enjoyed the art of writing. I was one of two 8th grade students to achieve a perfect score on the writing portion of standardized testing at my middle school.
