Hi, I'm Sam! I began playing the guitar twenty years ago. I soon began taking private lessons, and continued studying with noted guitarists for the next twelve years. I attended college at Yale University, where I earned a bachelor's degree with honors in Latin American studies. At Yale, I conducted research on Latin American music and did coursework in music theory and composition. Outside of class, I co-founded a student organization dedicated to producing jazz concerts on campus. I often participated in these concerts, performing with small ensembles I formed with my friends. Since graduation, I've logged many hours on stage and in the recording studio with various musical groups.

Over the years, I've had the privilege to teach guitar to students of varying ages and levels of advancement. If I had to give a name to my approach, I'd call it "Music First" teaching. I find that guitar method books often place too much emphasis on the acrobatics of the guitar--instructing students to slog through endless scale exercises that bear little resemblance to actual music. Though such exercises go some way towards developing one's technique, they do little to foster one's musicianship. My goal is for you to learn to make music, and I happen to believe that the best way to learn to make music is to make music. To that end I aim to get you playing real, recognizable music as soon as possible. I emphasize the importance of learning songs by ear and using fundamentals such as scales and arpeggios to express oneself through original compositions and improvisations.

Thank you for considering my teaching services. I'm always willing to chat and answer questions. I look forward to helping you on your guitar journey in any way I can.
