About Alfonso

I began tutoring when I reached high school, primarily in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry, and mostly through my school's volunteer programs. After a few years I decided to take the next step and began tutoring students individually as a part time job and had a great time teaching anything related to math and science - many of my students came on a one-time basis but some stayed with me all the way through the end of my time in high school. Soon after reaching college I accepted a tutoring position at an after school tutoring center called MetroSquash, the job with which I fully realized just how rewarding teaching is, whether you're a tutor, a teacher, a classmate, or a helpful friend. I then moved on to tutoring part time through a family friend's services in Southern California, although school brought me back to Chicago soon thereafter. Having spent the better part of the past 8 years tutoring in math, physics, and reading and writing, I'm comfortable working with students of all ages and grade levels.

While most of my experience is in SAT and ACT prep I am always more than happy to help you reach your goals, whether its passing your upcoming geometry midterm or getting over your writer's block. But I believe that tutoring is more than just reviewing the textbook and going over homework - tutoring is about inspiring curiosity and passing on the tools you need to learn.

I prefer working individually with students, although I'm happy to schedule group lessons if and when it's convenient.

Likewise I prefer teaching out of a book but I'm more than happy to prepare my own notes prior to the lesson if you let me know in advance.

I hope to work with you soon!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
