About Tara

Need a tutor? I can help! I am an Illinois state certified teacher, and have taught as a tenured teacher with Chicago Public Schools for 11 years. Endorsements held include: middle school, language arts (reading and writing), general, biological, physical, chemical, and social sciences, as well as marketing management. Subjects taught over the course of my tenure were: science, social studies, language arts, study skills, and research.

My qualifications stem from years of training and working with grade school children. Prior to my tenure, I worked as a substitute teacher for four years and a senior camp counselor for a special recreational program in Evanston, IL for three years. Furthermore, I have tutored elementary and middle school students in reading, writing, science, and math with various tutoring agencies. To add, I am experienced in teaching reading and writing using a variety of different strategies that address the various needs of students.

Regarding my education and training, I studied biology and microbiology at the undergraduate and graduate levels respectively, and received a Masters of Arts in Teaching degree from Northeastern Illinois University. I have done extensive studies in the fields of biology and education including numerous professional development courses, workshops, and seminars around the city.

Currently, I spend my days operating a small business, volunteering at my sons' schools, and teaching/tutoring my two youngest children and a neighbor's child. If you are looking for a caring, experienced, and patient tutor, contact me for more information. Rest assured, your child will be in great hands!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I am highly qualified to tutor and teach in this area. I hold an undergraduate degree in biology and I studied microbiology for two years in graduate school. To add, I have taught middle school science for the last 11 years. Disciplines taught were environmental science, Earth science, physical science, life science, and chemistry. Finally, I was a participant in the Museum of Science and Industry's Science Teacher Cohort Program for four years.

Elementary (K-6th)

My qualifications to tutor Elementary students stem from years of preparing, teaching, and raising young children. Prior to receiving a teaching degree, I worked as a substitute teacher for three years where I was routinely assigned to teach and work with young students in grades pre-k through fifth. Upon becoming a certified elementary teacher, I taught six grade science, reading, writing, health, and social studies for eight years in addition to raising and tutoring children of my own. Also, I worked as an after school tutor for students in grades second through eighth for several years.

Elementary Science

I have taught middle school science for the last 11 years. Disciplines taught were environmental science, Earth science, physical science, and chemistry. In addition, I hold an undergraduate degree in biology and I studied microbiology for two years in graduate school. Finally, I was a participant in the Museum of Science and Industry's Science Teacher Cohort Program for four years.

Study Skills

As an elementary and middle school teacher, I wore many hats. One in particular was that of a study skills instructor. Students cannot succeed without healthy study skills. A great majority of the students did not possess such important skills. Because of such, I had to teach them how to develop these skills. I regularly taught these lessons in large groups, small groups, and on a one-on-one basis.
