About Juliana

If you're looking for a tutor with a proactive work ethic paired with a laid-back attitude, I'm your gal! I believe in mutual respect, and will make effort to provide you with feedback and challenges specific to your goals, skills, and learning style. I want you to grow, and to gain confidence in your ability to grow!

About me:
I'm an interdisciplinary artist, teacher, and storyteller with a background in dance and writing. I currently teach ballet, tutor writing, and create interdisciplinary performance works. I'm working on developing a novel-length memoir as well as a creative nonfiction poetry series. I've begun to use my writing and performing skills in standup comedy, and I love it! I'm also interested in cooking, astronomy, reading, video games, TV/film, music, and animals!

Experience:
I have four years of experience as a writing tutor for graduate and undergraduate students, as well as four years of experience teaching ballet, pointe, and variations/repertory to ages child to adult, beginner through advanced levels. I’ve been studying ballet since I was three years old!

Education:
I hold an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts & Media from Columbia College Chicago and a BA in Performance Studies (dance focus) from Saint Mary's University of MN. I earned a dance division completion certificate from the Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts and studied ballet and modern dance as a dance major at Texas Christian University before transferring to Saint Mary's.

As a writing tutor:
I make an effort to identify where the strengths lie in a student's piece of writing, and to encourage the student to develop those strengths in a way that will best serve weaker aspects of the text. When addressing the weaker aspects, I often pose questions so that the student will think critically about her writing. I won't cheat a student by giving her the answers or rewriting her text for her, though I may offer some suggestions as learning examples. I want to help each student develop more confidence in his or her own ability to acquire new skills.

As a ballet instructor:
My dance classes are technique-based, beginning with warm-up and foundational exercises that feed into more complex new steps and sequences that we build upon week after week. I tailor my classes to the level of the students and make effort to challenge the individual strengths and weaknesses of each student. Safe, healthy technique and conditioning practices are a primary concern. As an educator, I am dedicated to cultivating a learning environment where students feel relaxed enough to have fun and engage creatively within structured discipline. I feel it is important that students want to work hard because the work itself is rewarding!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ballet

I began studying classical ballet when I was three years old, and performing ballet on stage when I was seven. I earned a dance division completion certificate from the Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts, studied dance at Texas Christian University, and hold a BA in Performance Studies with a focus in dance from Saint Mary's University of Minnesota. Since college, I’ve taught ballet, pointe, and classical variations/repertory to ages child to adult, beginner through pre-professional student levels.

My dance classes are technique-based, beginning with warm-up and foundational exercises that feed into more complex new steps and sequences that we build upon week after week. I draw from a combination of Vaganova, Cecchetti, and RAD methodologies, using safe, healthy technique and conditioning practices.

As an educator, I am dedicated to cultivating a learning environment where students feel relaxed enough to have fun and engage creatively within structured discipline. I am dedicated to fostering student-teacher relationships based on mutual respect and trust so that my students can flourish and explore without inhibition. I feel it is important that students want to work hard because the work itself is rewarding!
