About Max

My interest in teaching stems from my involvement in sports and the success I have had while working in teams. As a soccer and lacrosse player, I learned from a young age that people can accomplish so much more when they work together, listen to each other, and adapt plans to meet individual needs. Tutoring is very much the same concept. I view each partnership as a new team, a new opportunity to get to know somebody, to identify their strengths and weaknesses and find creative ways to improve their performance. While many tutors approach every student with the same structured routine, I think it is essential to take time to get to know my student, find out how he/she learns best, and tailor my teaching strategy towards their needs. I believe that this can be done in a way that is not only beneficial academically, but also fun for the student!

A little background about myself: I attended and graduated Cum Laude from a competitive New England prep school where I was a bi-varsity athlete and secretary/treasurer of my class. I went on to complete my undergraduate degree in International Relations with a concentration in Global Health at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. As one of the only Pre-Med students in the international relations program, I had to learn how to balance my study time across multiple complex subjects while still making time for friends, family, and fun. I graduated Georgetown with a 3.83 GPA and received Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa honors. I was fortunate to be accepted immediately into medical school at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, IL. Having completed three and a half years of medical school, I can safely say that I am thrilled with my career choice and am happy to provide counseling for those considering a career in medicine. I ultimately plan on pursuing a career in orthopaedic surgery while maintaining involvement in international health projects across Latin America.

While my strengths lie in math and science, I also feel confident tutoring in reading, writing, and Spanish. I have experience tutoring for the SAT, ACT, MCAT, and USMLE Step 1 and 2 examinations. However, I am just as happy to work with elementary and middle school students who are looking to improve their study strategies and test-taking skills. I hold myself to a very high standard when it comes to teaching. As such, I will never bill for a session unless students and parents are 100% satisfied with their progress.

Please contact with any questions! I look forward to working with you to achieve your personal and academic goals!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dutch

I am a dual citizen of the US and the Netherlands and grew up speaking Dutch at home. I travel to the Netherlands at least once per year to see friends and family. Lastly, I plan on working in a Dutch hospital during my final year of medical school. I have experience tutoring for standardized tests, which can translate to language tutoring ability.

Spanish

I grew up with a Mexican nanny and took Spanish classes through college. I received a 5 in both my Spanish AP Literature and Spanish AP Language exams. As part of my medical school rotations, I currently work once per week in a medical clinic that treats a predominantly Spanish-speaking patient population.

Writing

I received an 800 on my SAT Writing section. Throughout medical school, I have been an author on five published scientific articles and four book chapters on various aspects of orthopedic surgery.
