About Phillip

I first started enjoying math when I was in middle school. My teacher influenced the way I understood the material and she took pride in the subject, as I do now. After several, advanced, college-level math courses, I graduated college with more than just an Economics degree: I left with a love for math.

I began tutoring calculus and prealgebra to high school students while at college. Most recently, I've tutored several high school students while employed at a national learning center. Here, I tutored primarily SAT Math prep. Over the year as a tutor, I saw several students improve their PSAT and SAT math scores. Seeing my students grow as learners and improve as students is one of my dearest accomplishments.

As a tutor, I have taught students within a wide range of understanding of math. I specifically specialize in middle school math concepts plus high school level geometry, precalculus, calculus and SAT Math prep. So, whether you are in great need of one-on-one guidance or simply require review, I aim to facilitate breakthroughs that occur from within, on the student's terms. Simply pointing out errors or revealing answers would--I found--preclude understanding; instead, I employ a student's reading comprehension (and I will help with that as needed) and re-read problems (always out loud), consider applicable concepts, and speak his or her thought processes. These steps tell me more about a student's tendencies, which help me to tailor sessions most effectively. All the while, a student acquires a deeper understanding of the material.

My goal as a tutor is to ensure a student's understanding and application of math concepts. I will be patient until we reach that goal together!

My schedule is very flexible with a 12-hour cancellation policy and I can meet at a student's home or at another location, whichever is convenient and comfortable for the student. I'm happy and willing to travel to wherever Chicago public transit can take me.

I look forward to helping students better understand math. A little practice and guidance can go a long way.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Geometry

A strong understanding of geometry helped me quickly grasp algebra, calculus and trigonometry. I was able to succeed in advanced calculus with my knowledge of geometry. I've tutored SAT level geometry for over a year with multiple students.

Prealgebra

After excelling at high school level precalculus and calculus AB, I completed college level credit courses calculus and applied calculus. While not directly featured on the SAT, proficiency in precalculus can strongly benefit a student on that test.

Precalculus

As a introduction to calculus, precalculus is so important to understand in order to take on advanced math concepts. After completing high school AP Calculus AB, I went on to study calculus and applied calculus in college. I employ what students already know in order to understand precalculus; I believe students can grow with guidance as needed.

SAT Math

After taking advanced math courses in both high school and college, I was able to better understand the concepts tested on the SAT Math section. I tutored SAT Math prep for over a year with sophomores, juniors and seniors in high school. Most sessions lasted 2 hours and I encouraged students to study and gave them customized homework.
