About Jon

I retired after working as a lawyer and CFO for many years. After retiring, I wanted to launch another career in coaching, mentoring and teaching. I went back to school at the University of Chicago (Booth) to get my MBA. I am now coaching and mentoring executives. I also teach classes in Business Law, Competitive Strategy and Corporate Finance.

I offer tutoring in Corporate Finance, Accounting, History and Law. My MBA studies prepared me for Corporate Finance and Accounting. I was a practicing lawyer for 15 years, and an expert in corporate law, securities regulation, & M&A.

Obviously as a student, you are focused on solving specific problems or analyzing material for a class. I provide tutoring in fundamental academics, such as how to solve equations in Finance, how to prepare a Cash Flow statement in Accounting, or how to write an essay in History. Where i am different, is that I help you understand why the skill is important. My philosophy is that you will retain the material better if you understand why it is useful. Also, you will be more confident AFTER school.

I can assist students in learning how to solve a problem not just memorize the answer. Many students struggle on examinations because they don't know where to start, and how to organize the analysis. This is true in all subjects. On any in-class exam, you will be confronted with questions that are not just repeats from the homework. The key is where to start and how to organize your knowledge to solve the problem or write the analysis.

I am very detailed oriented. I will do all the equations with you, or the actual entries in accounting. My philosophy is simple: Practice, test, repeat. I will teach you to use your hand calculator for any mathematical problems. Excel is great, but the hand calculator is (1) more mobile and (2) better to learn the skills.

I have studied American History as an avocation for decades post graduation. My periods are 1750-1808 (end of Jefferson's presidency) and 1912-present. We are living history everyday, so I like to use current day examples to understand historic events. For example, the EU is struggling with the definition of the scope of their currency union, just as the US struggled up to 1790 when Congress assumed the debts of the states. Today we are still arguing about the role of the Federal government; the same argument that occurred during Washington's first term.

I have tutored many students at both Booth, and Notre Dame business schools. I have also taught classes at Harold Washington College (as a substitute or guest teacher). Many students are very smart but are very inexperienced in particular subjects. I have tutored students whose mother tongue is not English. I don't translate, but I understand how to approach students for whom English is not their primary language.

I can meet you at Starbucks, or a public location, or in a WeWork office in Chicago.
