About Ryan

I am a certified Elementary Education teacher who had 2 years full time classroom experience teaching 5th grade at a public school and 4th-6th grade at a public Montessori school. I have also substitute taught in various schools around Chicago and Michigan over the last several years. I have experience working with students of various backgrounds, ages and ability levels. I really love it when a student of mine reaches a point where it clicks for him or her in the particular subject they are working on. My favorite subject to teach is Math because of the challenge. I get excited about tutoring because I get to build relationships with my students as I work with them which better helps me to personalize their learning to suit them. Through building these relationships, I have found that students often perform better and are more engaged when they feel that the person teaching them cares for them as individuals and wants the best for them.

I am an avid Sports fan with Basketball being my favorite sport. I also like to travel to new places and interact with the people there. I have been to Europe and Africa and live in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Chicago where I get the privilege to regular engage with people from all over the world. I like to read in various genres but particularly stories that help me better understand people. I recently got married and love getting to spend so much more time with my lovely wife Katie.

I am an effective Math tutor because I understand the challenges many students have with Math and am patient with process of seeking new ways to communicate the math ideas to my students so that they can apply the principles to the particular material.

I enjoy tutoring reading because I get to work with my students to better comprehend the texts we are looking out and help students grow to love reading. Students who enjoy reading have access to so much of the world, consequently I seek to help my students enjoy reading more so they can have more access to the world.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra to 7th and 8th graders and scored a 100% on the WyzAnt proficiency exam for Algebra 1.

I am qualified to be a basketball tutor due to my personal experience playing basketball, my enthusiasm for the game, and prior coaching experience in an adult recreation league. I played organized basketball through school from 5th grade until 12th grade and intramural basketball in college including a championship at the highest intramural level at my college. I regularly follow NBA and college basketball learning strategy, new plays and styles. Lastly, I have coached adults in a church recreation league.
