About Justin

I am a college student at the University of Chicago majoring in biochemistry and concurrently pursuing a Master of Science in Chemistry. I have a passion for math and sciences, particularly chemistry and biology, and love sharing this passion with others. I also currently work in a chemical biology lab here at UChicago, where, among other things, we are developing synthetic peptides to use as chemical probes and novel therapeutics for various cancers.

I have tutored throughout all four years of my time in high school in math, chemistry, biology, physics, and Spanish. I have always found that one of the most important aspects of tutoring is to understand the specific ways that an individual student learns best, which can be difficult for a teacher in a classroom setting. I believe I have greatly developed this skill during my tutoring in high school and have found it to be one of the most rewarding parts of the experience. Additionally, I am extroverted, friendly, and patient, and I am receptive to the needs of each student.

I have completed coursework in mathematics up through complex analysis, including calculus of one and several variables and differential equations. With calculus in particular, I have a talent for explaining the math conceptually, which is often the biggest frustration for students studying calculus - beyond that, much of the math builds on students' foundations in algebra. Once, however, the concepts behind calculus make sense, it can become a profound and enjoyable form of math.

I have always had a passion for science, and I have always been able to impart this on others. I have studied three years of physics, including AP Physics C and a semester at Princeton University during high school. In chemistry, I have completed high school and AP Chemistry, as well as organic chemistry here at the University of Chicago. I have also studied AP Biology. In all of these subjects, I have a strong understanding of conceptual hierarchies at their foundations, which are important in order to appreciate the sciences. I have helped very many students who are struggling with science, and changed the attitudes toward science of even more.

I hope you will reach out to schedule sessions with me. I have a very flexible schedule and can meet here in Hyde Park (the Regenstein Library at the University of Chicago is an excellent place to tutor and work) or elsewhere in the city. I hope to hear from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Have completed courses in, and have tutoring experience in, mathematics from Algebra up through real and complex analysis, including differential equations, in high school and at the University of Chicago.

Algebra 2

Completed honors algebra 2 with trigonometry in high school, as well as one- and multi-variable calculus, differential equations, and complex analysis in high school and at the University of Chicago.

Biology

I scored a 5 on AP Biology and study biological chemistry at the University of Chicago. Additionally, I apply these principles in a chemical biology lab where I work at UChicago.

Calculus

5 on AP BC Calculus
Completed one- and multi-variable calculus, differential equations, and complex analysis at the University of Chicago.

Chemistry

I have studied general and organic chemistry at Stanford University and the University of Chicago. Additionally, I apply the principles of these classes in the chemical biology lab that I work in at the University of Chicago.

Differential Equations

I have completed MATH 201 at UChicago, which covers differential equations and complex analysis. The differential equations portion of the class covered first- and second-order linear differential equations, other first order equations, power series solutions to second-order linear differential equations, Euler equations, and systems of first-order linear differential equations.

Organic Chemistry

During the summer in between my junior and senior year of high school I took an accelerated organic chemistry course from Stanford University. During my first year of UChicago, I took the full length honors organic chemistry sequence (CHEM 230, 231, 232). Both of these included laboratory work. Additionally, one of my biggest jobs in the lab I work in now at UChicago is organic chemical synthesis, applying the principles I studied in these classes.

SAT Math

I have significant tutoring experience in the SAT subject tests, particularly Math (I and II) and Chemistry.

Spanish

8 years of academic Spanish study
Conversational fluency
5 on AP Spanish Language exam
