About Sean

After completing an undergraduate dual degree major in Biochemistry and Cognitive Science from Case Western Reserve University, I moved to Chicago to pursue a career in teaching through Teach For America. While teaching high school physics and chemistry at a CPS school for 2 years, I decided to apply to medical school in order to further my passion for science and the ability to help people directly.

With the first year of medical school under my belt, I've come to recognize that I continue to enjoy teaching. I've also honed a number of study skills in the past year that have helped me get through hundreds of pages of complex material in as little as a week's time. I would love to pass these skills onto students and help them develop their own study skills.

Having had to self-learn math, I used multiple resources from multiple modalities - auditory, visual, paper - to create shortcuts and tricks that made the hard concepts seem quite reasonable to understand. While math drills are a small component of this strategy, they become second-nature after a few repetitions. My strength lies in the ability to teach students to do the same - they develop their own shortcuts and make learning all the more personalized. Once that has been accomplished, those concepts stay with students for a long time. I've used the same strategies in my first year of medical school that I used during my first semester of college without realizing it.

Rather than memorizing facts, I chose to understand the logic behind scientific concepts. Instead of memorization, I can help students focus on deriving the information on their own and fact-checking themselves in the process. These skills are useful in a multitude of subjects, not just science.

Before and after lessons are conducted, I will ask for feedback in order to gauge how you learn best, and provide you with the most efficient tutoring experience. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

MCAT

I'm a current second-year medical student and a former high school physics and chemistry teacher. I taught for 2 years as a teacher and another 2 years before that as a tutor. I also graduated from Case Western Reserve University with a dual degree major in Biochemistry and Cognitive Science.
