Northwestern University (Theatre)
Hello! I just recently returned from completing a Fulbright research grant in Morocco where I researched storytelling and the oral tradition. I am a creative writer and am currently finishing a book of short stories based in Morocco. The year prior I taught English in France, where I worked with middle and high school students on their oral proficiency. I also gave one-on-one lessons to two high school students. I enjoy working with students on what's important to them, and tailoring lessons to their personal interests and needs. Students learn in many different ways, and I try to discover the style that suits each best: reading or writing-based, dynamic, auditory, visual, etc. Most importantly, I encourage students to pursue what they are most passionate about and guide them to develop the skills necessary to achieve these goals.
I studied Theatre at Northwestern University, and I find that this degree serves me in many fields. As a tutor, I apply what I learned in college to improve creative writing, public speaking, and student confidence. I am also passionate about foreign languages. I am fluent and business-proficient in French, fluent in Moroccan Arabic (Darija), and have 4 years experience with Modern Standard Arabic. These language skills have offered me opportunities to live abroad three times.
While teaching English in a middle school and high school in France, I built and led lessons independently with groups of 10-15 students focusing on oral proficiency. Students had many different ages and levels of English, which taught me to adapt to each group's ability, encourage confidence, and challenge students.
My degree in theatre hugely improved my own public speaking and prepared me to share what I learned with others. Simple skills such as eye contact and body language go a long way in public speaking. Theatre also taught me reading comprehension and writing skills, including how to analyze a text and how to structure and recount an effective story. I personally read a variety of genres, from biographies to current events to novels and plays. I am prepared to work with a student on any subject matter.
Feel free to contact me with any questions or to schedule a lesson, even in related subjects outside the ones listed. I am excited to get to know you and help you achieve your personal goals! Hello! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have recently returned from completing a Fulbright research grant in Morocco where I became fluent in the local dialect of Arabic, Darija. In addition, I have a foundation of 3 years of university Modern Standard Arabic. I have knowledge of diverse resources available through applications and online to help Arabic learners complement their classes and progress more rapidly outside the classroom.
My degree in Theatre from Northwestern University has provided me with extensive experience speaking in a variety of public forums, creating dialogue, and leading groups in a collaborative process. As a storyteller, I am personally working to develop my own ability to craft and present a story, and I hope to share what I have learned so far with students. In addition, I worked as a, English teaching assistant in France. In this setting, I developed my own public speaking by performing lessons in the classroom while also helping students to gain confidence speaking publicly (even in a foreign language!).
