About Janet

Bio

I am a life-long learner who loves to help others learn! I believe that every person is able to learn if given the time and the tools needed to be successful. What works for one person may not work for another. I find joy in helping each individual discover what works. I have been studying and applying the theories of differentiated instruction, multiple intelligences, and personalized education for many years and believe that these theories, if carefully applied, work wonders.

I have applied these theories of personalizing education for more than 20 years, with individuals, in small groups, in the classroom, and in school-wide settings. I have worked with elementary students, high school students, and adults to teach a variety of subjects for remediation and/or enrichment. Through these experiences, I have realized that I do not have a specific format that is used for all circumstances; instead, I work with the student to discover what will work and to provide the tools for success as consistently and patiently as possible.

Since my very first teaching position when all of my students were the first in the school's history to have a 100% pass rate for their university matriculation, I have used innovative, challenging, and encouraging methods to help many students find success.

I would happily meet with you at an establishment like Panera or Starbucks, or a library of your choosing.
I would expect to meet regularly according to our agreement, but understand that sometimes life happens. At this time, I would appreciate at least an hour notice and am willing to reschedule within a week, if possible.

I look forward to beginning a journey of curiosity and success with you!

Adobe InDesign

Adobe InDesign

I have been using Adobe InDesign since about 2001 when Josten's Yearbook Company switched to it as the software of choice. I attended workshops to learn, and then taught myself and six years worth of students in InDesign. I also have more than 10 years of experience in small Institutional Advancement offices where I have been responsible for producing brochures, newsletters, annual reports, and other collateral materials using Adobe InDesign.

Business

Microsoft PowerPoint,

Microsoft PowerPoint

As a former Library Media Specialist at a high school, I created a Computer Literacy Curriculum and taught the foundation course for several years. During this time, I helped students to learn PowerPoint as a method to demonstrate their knowledge and communicate their message through multi-media presentations. I have found that the most effective method for teaching PowerPoint is to work on very specific projects to determine the most appropriate design, format, animations, etc. In this way, students learn the technique at the same time as they are learning the nuances of presentation strategy.
Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word

I have developed and taught Computer Literacy courses and I have taught Professional Development Courses on helping teachers how to incorporate Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and other technologies, in the classroom.

Proofreading

Proofreading

I taught upper level English at a College in Hong Kong where I required my 40 students to write 500 word essays twice a week. I made certain that each essay was thoroughly proofread before I returned it to them, and that they received the marked essay before they were required to write the next one. Also, part of their university matriculation consisted in a Proofreading Section which I taught. One class of students had a 98% pass rate while another class had a 100% pass rate. Since then, I have used the proofreading method to help students improve their writing skills and their reading comprehension. I do not provide the correct answers; instead, I ask questions which the student must consider to provide the correct word, grammar, syntax, or paragraph structure. I have continued to proofread and edit papers for students from the elementary through the doctoral level, including several works for publication.

Study Skills

Study Skills

The most important element to developing personal study skills is learning how YOU learn. As a teacher of the 8th grade to high school bridge program, I developed a Holistic Study Skills program that helps individuals understand how they learn best, develop tools specific to their needs, and create success plans to help them become independent and confident learners in any subject. The program I developed has been adopted by four different schools to date. I have also taught these methods to other teachers in a professional development setting.

For the English Language and Literature Certification, I received a total score of 91, with Reading at 93; Language, Listening, and Speaking at 95; and Writing at 100. I have taught English at the high school level for many years and I have also assisted Doctoral students in proofreading and editing thesis papers.

Ambidexterous teacher: She knows Mac and PC protocols

I needed tutoring in preparing a manuscript for publication through Amazon's Create application, and Janet led me through thicket. She not only knew the big picture approach with a Word-based program, but the shortcuts I could take advantage of using my iMac. Importantly, she recognized my limitations as a do-it-yourself publisher, and recommended more complex fixes.

Janet goes above and beyond

What a pleasure it's been to work with Janet. She takes the extra time to really get to know the child and their particular learning style. She's patient, encouraging and thorough. We are lucky to have found her.
