Hello! I am excited to begin learning with you! I have two degrees in Violin Performance, one in Music Theory, and certificates in General Honors and Multiculturalism. I am Suzuki Certified through Violin Book 4. I enjoyed all of the main academic subjects when I was in grade and high school and received high marks on 7 different AP exams (5: World History, U.S. Government and Politics, English Literature and Composition/ 4: U.S. History, Chemistry, Physics/ 3: Calculus). My passions are learning about this world (and beyond) and playing and writing music. I love to help others nail their educational and musical goals and stretch themselves further than they ever thought possible! I have taught private violin lessons for 10 years, and have found that the skill development and teaching techniques I use in music lessons produces successful results in other academic areas as well. Learning should be a joyous activity, and too often the one-size-fits-all demands of the school system only creates stress and difficulties for students that walk to a different drumbeat. I can help with getting you back on track, and teaching you processes for learning and studying that will allow you to become your own successful teacher.
I am comfortable teaching music to students of any age or ability level, and I am experienced working with both children and adults. For other subject areas, I am most comfortable with ages K-12, but can also tutor for some basic college-level courses such as College Algebra or general English. I am happy to communicate with your child's teacher in order to address their needs, strengths, and weaknesses as successfully as possible.
Most sessions occur in my studio, which is located in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago. An extra fee will be charged for travel to the student's location. I have flexible hours during the weekday. Alison was an excellent teacher on the violin. She has clearly been teaching for some time as she was very prepared for the lesson by asking key questions ahead of time and then addressing them on the first lesson. Alison also took the time to make hands on corrections on the fundamentals of holding the bow, violin, addressed chin and shoulder rest concerns, etc. I highly recommend Alison for adults and children. Excellent teacher.
Two of my children needed help to summer with their violin and Viola seating audition music for the CYSO. Alison over the last couple of weeks has been wonderful. My son is at a lower level orchestra and is 8 yrs old and my 14 year old daughter is on the top orchestra. Alison was able to connect with both of them very quickly and adjust her teaching style to their individual needs and personalities. He style is easy going but purposeful, it is amazing how much she has been able to help them in a few weeks. My son said he looks forward to his lessons and wants to do well. She broken down difficult music into little pieces and when it is all put together, it will sound great. We highly recommend Alison. Alison is primarily a violin teacher but was able to really help my daughter win professional level Viola music. She is pleasant, professional and connects well with children and teens.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
