My love for teaching is inspired by many sources. It emanates from the educators I have studied under in the past and from my never-ending pursuit of knowledge. What motivates me the most to teach is the opportunity to help a young person realize their own potential and achieve their academic goals. I am dedicated to my students’ success because in it I find my own.
While earning my teaching credentials at Northeastern Illinois University, I had the opportunity to student-teach at Wildwood Elementary and Amundsen High School. Upon completing the certification process with a GPA of 4.0, I worked for a test preparation company and taught English and World Studies at Uplift Community High School. I have taught at the one-on-one, small group, and classroom level.
I currently hold state certifications to teach middle and high school, and I am endorsed in history, social studies, and English. I specialize in English and reading for the ACT, SAT, and PSAT. Also, I tutor for the SAT II Subject Test (Literature, US and World History) and AP US History and Literature. Moreover, I tutor all subjects and skills that fall under the general categories of social studies, history, and English. I have organized college admissions essay workshops in the past and know the common-app essay process.
I am flexible and can meet in a local library, or in a student’s home. I have a flexible 24-hour cancellation policy and will willingly schedule makeup sessions. For standardized tests, I require a diagnostic test before beginning a tutoring program. The purpose of this is to gather data on the student’s abilities to help shape a curriculum map. Also, I will maintain constant communication with parents, to ensure they are aware of their children’s progress, and allow them an opportunity for questions or feedback. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
