About William

Hi there! My name is William and I am a freelance writer and English tutor. Since I began freelancing in 2010 I've contributed to everything from newspapers to Cracked.com to the Lollapalooza festival guide. I'm new to tutoring, but I got my start teaching English in Kolkata, India, where I worked with students whose ages ranged from around six to sixteen. Later, while working as a Volunteer Coordinator for the New York City Coalition Against Hunger, I gained experience managing middle, high school and college aged students.

Since I love reading and writing, I make it a point to share my enthusiasms and help students get excited about learning. Whether they're composing an essay on Henry Ford or doing research for a paper on Henry V, I want to help my students extract something exciting or engaging from the project so that they can leave their own unique mark on their work.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

In my experience with the ACT English section, I have found it vital to balance knowledge of test-taking fundamentals with the study of the nuts and bolts of grammar. After all, the first steps towards earning a top score are knowing how to tackle the easy questions first, how to pace yourself on the harder ones and how to generally manage your time. I earned a twelve (out of twelve) on my ACT Writing section and thirty on both my English and Reading sections, so I know all too well how important a rounded approach is to improving one’s score!

ACT Reading

I am a tutor and freelance writer who has experience working with middle and high school students and teaching English as a foreign language. When I’m not tutoring, I write fiction and regularly contribute to several websites and magazines. My score on the ACT reading section was 30, and I earned a 12/12 on the writing section.

Literature

When I’m not tutoring, I focus on my career as an author. I have written two novels and published several short stories online and in literary journals. I am also a voracious reader. My knowledge of great novels and authors combined with my experience teaching English as a foreign language gives me the intellectual firepower and hands-on experience to help you finish that write-up or essay.

Proofreading

As an editor for Gamevolution U.K., a big part of my job is to punch up articles written by younger, less experienced writers. This involves making minor tweaks and additions to their work without altering the overall tone or character of the article. It’s important to know how to walk a writer (or student) through proposed changes, pointing out the strengths and weaknesses in their writing and helping them to improve with each editing session. I believe that proofreading is as much about thoughtfulness as it is about thoroughness, and I try to apply this principle as a tutor.

Reading

Aside from the fact that I earned a score of thirty on my ACT Reading section, I am an avid reader of everything from novels to newspapers, magazines and comic books. My teaching strategy involves focusing on reading comprehension and pacing. It is my opinion that many young or inexperienced readers make a lot of their mistakes because they rush. To help remedy this, I encourage students to slow down their reading speed. This helps us to find the areas where they’re struggling. I then focus on these problem areas and do my best to help the students become stronger readers. The ultimate goal is to make reading fun and easy!

Writing

When I’m not tutoring, I write fiction and regularly contribute to several websites and magazines. I am a tutor and freelance writer who has experience working with middle and high school students and teaching English as a foreign language.

Great writing tutor

Will has been working with my 11th grade son on AP English and SAT tutoring for several months now. Will brings writing prompts and test preparation materials to his sessions in addition to reviewing my sons in-class writing assignments. My son feels he has really helped him identify his weaknesses and help him to improve in those areas. I appreciate that Will provides detailed written feedbac
