About Sara

I am an Illinois State certified CPS instructor with a Type 10 endorsement in Visual Arts and Special Education. I also hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an Emphasis in Art Education from The School Of The Art Institute Of Chicago. Immediately after graduation, I went on to become the Lead Art Instructor for the 2009-2010 academic year at Rudy Lozano Leadership Academy adjoined with The Institute Of Latino Progress, which focuses on Adult Education, Workforce Development and Youth Services serving communities in Pilsen and Little Village.

I have extensive experience working with a diverse population of both adults and children in a variety of subjects ranging from Drawing, Painting, History, Science, Language Arts, Mathematics and Reading Comprehension. Currently, I work at two art studios in Chicago. I am the Lead Art Instructor for a children’s art studio in Lincoln Park as well as a Senior Adult Art Instructor at an art studio and store located in Wicker Park. I also teach individual, private art lessons to a handful of personal clients around the Chicago Metropolitan area. Whether I’m teaching Art or Algebra, my main objective as an instructor is to provide a safe and supportive environment that fosters learning, independence and self-esteem. Working collaboratively to design compelling arts curriculum while integrating a multi-cultural/cross disciplinary approach to instructing, motivating and inspiring students is paramount to my teaching philosophy in all areas and subjects.

I enjoy conducting and being involved with a broad-based art program designed to encourage a multi-dimensional approach to making art, incorporating both classic techniques as well as contemporary genres, methodologies and strategies. My students have explored drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, sewing, photo-transfers, self-portraiture, journaling, book making and various DIY projects. In my classroom, the emphasis is on diversity and self-exploration while gaining confidence, developing individual art styles and understanding personal identity.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

Fundamentally, I believe that the process of creating art is inherently about self-expression and focus. I am truly convinced that both the appreciation and practice of visual art is crucial to our development in all aspects of our lives and can help us make sense of the changing world around us.

Art has always been something that I have loved and explored. From coloring on paper plates while sitting on my kitchen floor with my mom 30 years ago to realizing that eyes aren't really "white" when I was taking my first serious oil painting class to teaching students how to make their own journals at The School of The Art Institute Of Chicago Summer Camp...the process has been such an important part of the finished product.
Journey=Destination and all that jazz, it's true!
I have painted professionally for 20+ years and have exhibited my work in galleries since 1999. I have been teaching painting to both adults and children privately and publicly for the past 10+ years.
Whether I’m teaching Art or Algebra, my main objective as an instructor/mentor is to provide a safe and supportive environment that fosters learning, independence and self-esteem.
