Denison Unviersity (Studio Art)
Hello! My name is Joyce L. I graduated from Denison University with a bachelor's degree, majoring in Studio Art and minoring in Educational Studies. In the past, I have served as an Americorps member through City Year tutoring 6th grade math for a year. For the past two years, I am tutoring K - 8 math and reading as an independent contractor through a Title 1 vendor called DMDL. In my independent tutoring practice, I seek to understand and know about the learning style, interests, strengths and weakness of my students to be able to create customized lessons that meet them where they are. I believe that it is important to give positive constructive criticism and encouragement while tutoring and to seek out different strategies that would best fit the student to learn a particular skill. I am passionate about education and I aim to make my tutoring sessions fun and engaging for the student.
I am also a professional artist and musician. I love helping people and teaching art. I have been teaching art courses for three months. I believe that anyone can acquire the skills to draw, paint, film, create music, learn instrument and take great pictures if they have the desire to learn. I am willing to tutor anyone regardless of skill level in drawing and painting. Which means you can have little or no experience in drawing and painting and I will tutor you. I do have three characteristics that I would like my students to have. You must have a strong desire to learn, an open-mind and optimistic attitude towards your artistic and creative growth. If you embody all of these, please contact me and we will start your journey on developing your drawing and painting skills. Hello! My name is Joyce L. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I believe that I am qualified to tutor drawing because I have been drawing for 18 years. In high school and college, I have taken many drawing classes and have learned techniques and exercises that have strengthened and improved my own skill at drawing. I went to Denison University and majored in Studio Art and have received the Vail Scholarship at Denison University for my drawings. My approach to tutoring/teaching drawing is having my students learn and experiment with the elements of art and principles of design and teaching them different ways of applying them to the actual act of drawing.
I studied congas and djembe for four years. I also played snare drum for 6 years and know my rudiments very well. I also know how to teach students how to play without learning how to read music.
I have been tutoring for two years. My first year I tutoring as a corps member through Americorps tutoring 6th grade math. During the past year, I have tutored 5th to 8th graders in math.
I believe that I am qualified to tutor painting because I have taken painting classes in high school and college and have taught my self how to paint. I have been working with acrylic, oil and watercolor for 5 years and have learned the difference between all three and how to use them to make art. I have the ability to teach my students to develop knowledge on the difference of using acrylic, oil and watercolor and how to create and build their own canvases. I also have the ability to teach my students to develop a specific sensitivity and attentiveness towards using acrylic, oil and watercolor to make works of art.
I have been teaching reading fluency and reading comprehension for two years as an academic instructor through Title 1 services. I try to find fun activities that will allow my students to connect and understand the what they are reading and why it is important to develop reading skills.
