I am a certified teacher with nine years of classroom experience teaching students of various ages and education levels. I have taught students from 6th through 12th grades at remedial through advanced levels. I have been trained and in turn taught other staff members the basics of the Common Core writing standards. I was a member of a district wide team of writing teachers who sought to streamline the art and science of teaching writing across grade levels. I developed and led both after school creative writing clubs and school newspapers. I have taught struggling students the basics of decoding skills in reading and I have challenged proficient readers to critically analyze the great works of literature.
In addition to my experience as a teacher I have had other contacts with students through my time as a football coach, baseball coach, and my time as a youth pastor. I have worked with parents as a teacher, coach, and youth leader in hopes of helping them understand how they too can help their children. As a father of five children I know the importance that parents play in the lives of their children.
I hope to work with students by assessing their need, setting achievable goals, then designing a personal plan that will allow them to achieve success. I believe that the most important component in education is the student. When they own their own educational goals they will soar. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taken 30+ graduate-level credits toward a Master's of Divinity degree through Western Seminary in Portland. I spent four years as a senior pastor and an additional two years as a youth pastor. I have preached through numerous books of the Bible and feel competent in all areas of Biblical studies.
As a teacher I used the 11th grade Common Core standards to design my English classroom. I have also gone through Common Core writing standards training through an educational services department in Yakima, Washington. I have used the Common Core writing concepts in a classroom setting and trained fellow staff members on the expectations of Common Core writing.
I have over ten years of football coaching experience. I have coached offensive and defensive linemen, been a high school defensive coordinator, a high school special teams coordinator, and a junior high head coach. I have worked in many different offensive and defensive philosophies including the Wing-T, the I, the spread, the 4-3, the 4-4, and the 5-2. I have been involved with off-season training programs as well.
