Bio

I am a tutor with 5 years of teaching experience and extensive education in math and science.

When teaching, I patiently interact with a student, know when they are confused, and guide their thinking in the right direction. I have tutored students who were struggling with various subjects including algebra, calculus, chemistry, and physics. Over time, their understanding of the subject dramatically improved. Also, their test grades improved.

I received a Master of Science in chemistry from the University of California Berkeley. There I took coursework in physical chemistry, and did research in spectroscopy. I also worked as a teaching assistant for general chemistry, spectroscopy, and quantum mechanics. At Lawrence University, I received a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry, Magna Cum Laude. I did research in biophysics, and worked as a tutor for general chemistry. With this experience, I am well prepared to teach chemistry, physics, and math.

I enjoy learning and I love teaching. For me, the best moment in tutoring is when the light of understanding suddenly appears on a student’s face. I know the value of education, and I want my students to learn, understand, and succeed. I look forward to working with you or your child.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I hold a Master of Science in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. I have 5 years of teaching experience as a tutor and a college teaching assistant. To the beginning student, algebra can seem like a foreign language. In a way it is, with new symbols and grammar. I can help to translate algebra into English and show how it builds on familiar math concepts like addition and multiplication. In the past, I have helped students who were struggling with algebra to grasp the concepts and techniques, and to solve problems successfully. I would very much like to help you learn, understand, and succeed in Algebra 1.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I hold a Master of Science in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. I have 5 years of teaching experience as a tutor and a college teaching assistant. Algebra 2 builds on the complexity of algebra 1. I can guide you as you explore this new complexity, and, if needed, I can also bring you up to speed on algebra 1 techniques, and the underlying basic math skills. I will meet you at your level of knowledge and build from there to help you better understand and use algebra. I would very much like to help you learn, understand, and succeed in Algebra 2.
Calculus,

Calculus

I hold a Master of Science in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. I have 5 years of teaching experience as a tutor and a college teaching assistant. Calculus requires a firm grasp of the underlying math, and introduces subtle new concepts. I have helped students to learn and use calculus. I meet the student at their level of knowledge and build from there. I teach in a conversational style, using questions, hints, and examples to guide one through the subject. Calculus is tough, but with help you can learn it. I would very much like to help you learn, understand, and succeed in calculus.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

I hold a Master of Science in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. I have 5 years of teaching experience as a tutor and a college teaching assistant. I have helped students to learn and use chemistry. I meet the student at their level of knowledge and build from there. Success in chemistry draws on math, physics, logic, and visualization skills. It can seem intimidating, but I can guide you through understanding chemistry by starting from basic concepts and using interactive questioning and real world examples. I would very much like to help you learn, understand, and succeed in chemistry.
Geometry,

Geometry

I hold a Master of Science in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. I have 5 years of teaching experience as a tutor and a college teaching assistant. I have helped students to learn and use geometry, which was important in the chemistry courses I have taught. I meet the student at their level of knowledge and build from there. In geometry, you use numbers, words, and pictures to draw conclusions about shapes, lengths, areas, volumes. I can help you apply apply your own spatial intuition to these problems. I teach in a conversational style, with questions, hints, and examples to guide you through the subject. I would very much like to help you learn, understand, and succeed in geometry.
Physics,

Physics

I hold a Master of Science in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, where I specialized in physical chemistry. I have 5 years of teaching experience as a tutor and a college teaching assistant. I have successfully learned, used, and taught physics. I meet the student at their level of knowledge and build from there. Success in physics requires a balance of rigorous logic with imagination. I can help you develop both by using interactive questioning and real world examples, from an apple falling off a tree to the stars dancing above us. Physics can be tough, but with help you can learn it. I would very much like to help you learn, understand, and succeed in physics.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I hold a Master of Science in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. I have 5 years of teaching experience as a tutor and a college teaching assistant. Algebra opens the gate to the world of higher math, and pre algebra lays the path to that gate. Pre algebra introduces new symbols, new rules, and new types of problems to solve. I can help you become familiar with these concepts by meeting you at your level of knowledge and building from there. I teach in a conversational style, using questions, hints, and examples to guide you through the subject. I would very much like to help you learn, understand, and succeed in pre algebra.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I hold a Master of Science in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. I have 5 years of teaching experience as a tutor and a college teaching assistant. Pre-calculus pulls together geometry, algebra, trigonometry, and other topics, which will show up and be important in a calculus course. The broad range of subjects is a challenge. I can help by meeting you at your level of knowledge, and building from there, until you are ready for calculus. I teach in a conversational style, with questions, hints, and examples to help you explore and become comfortable with these areas of math. I would very much like to help you learn, understand, and succeed in pre-calculus.

Andre, 1 lesson with Erik

Flexible, knowledgable and patient tutor.

Erik has been great. He is willing to flex and, based on his background, bring work with my son on physics and chemistry as well as math. He is great in all these areas, and very patient in teaching concepts and going through examples. A great tutor.

Adam, 14 lessons with Erik

Thorough, intuitive and kind Chemistry Tutor

Erik helped me today prepare for a make up exam in Chemistry. He was very prepared and explained concepts and math equations to me explicitly. He even provided me with notes he made for our session including key terms, diagrams and formulas. He was very friendly and patient.

Dana, 1 lesson with Erik

Excellent, patient, extremely thorough.

Erik was able to explain chemistry in a way that made sense and brought clarity to a subject that our son had been struggling with all year. We were delighted with the progress that he made on his last exam and very thankful to Erik for his role in our son's improvement and success.

Laurie , 3 lessons with Erik

Patient and Clear

Erik is patient while people work thought a problem. He knows the content, but instead of just lording it over you, he helps you work through it for yourself. He will listen to what you say you need and then try to help you get there yourself.
