About Erik

I am a tutor with 5 years of teaching experience and extensive education in math, science and music.

When teaching, I patiently interact with a student, know when they are confused, and guide their thinking in the right direction. I have tutored students who were struggling with various subjects including algebra, calculus, chemistry, and physics. Over time, their understanding of the subject dramatically improved. Also, their test grades improved.

I received a Master of Science in chemistry from the University of California Berkeley. There I took coursework in physical chemistry, and did research in spectroscopy. I also worked as a teaching assistant for general chemistry, spectroscopy, and quantum mechanics. At Lawrence University, I received a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry, Magna Cum Laude. I did research in biophysics, and worked as a tutor for general chemistry. With this experience, I am well prepared to teach chemistry, physics, and math.

While at Lawrence university, I also earned a Bachelor of Music in trombone performance. As a trombonist, I was the section leader for the Jazz Ensemble and the Symphony Orchestra. I also took courses in music theory and composition, both classical and jazz. In addition, I have taken many years of piano lessons. I teach music performance, theory, and composition.

I enjoy learning and I love teaching. For me, the best moment in tutoring is when the light of understanding suddenly appears on a student’s face. I know the value of education, and I want my students to learn, understand, and succeed. I look forward to working with you or your child.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I hold a Master of Science in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. I have 5 years of teaching experience as a tutor and a college teaching assistant.

To the beginning student, algebra can seem like a foreign language. In a way it is, with new symbols and grammar. I can help to translate algebra into English and show how it builds on familiar math concepts like addition and multiplication. In the past, I have helped students who were struggling with algebra to grasp the concepts and techniques, and to solve problems successfully.

I would very much like to help you learn, understand, and succeed in Algebra 1.

Algebra 2

I hold a Master of Science in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. I have 5 years of teaching experience as a tutor and a college teaching assistant.

Algebra 2 builds on the complexity of algebra 1. I can guide you as you explore this new complexity, and, if needed, I can also bring you up to speed on algebra 1 techniques, and the underlying basic math skills. I will meet you at your level of knowledge and build from there to help you better understand and use algebra.

I would very much like to help you learn, understand, and succeed in Algebra 2.

Calculus

I hold a Master of Science in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. I have 5 years of teaching experience as a tutor and a college teaching assistant.

Calculus requires a firm grasp of the underlying math, and introduces subtle new concepts. I have helped students to learn and use calculus. I meet the student at their level of knowledge and build from there. I teach in a conversational style, using questions, hints, and examples to guide one through the subject. Calculus is tough, but with help you can learn it.

I would very much like to help you learn, understand, and succeed in calculus.

Chemistry

I hold a Master of Science in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. I have 5 years of teaching experience as a tutor and a college teaching assistant.

I have helped students to learn and use chemistry. I meet the student at their level of knowledge and build from there. Success in chemistry draws on math, physics, logic, and visualization skills. It can seem intimidating, but I can guide you through understanding chemistry by starting from basic concepts and using interactive questioning and real world examples.

I would very much like to help you learn, understand, and succeed in chemistry.

General Music

I hold a Bachelor of Music in trombone performance from the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music. I also hold degrees in chemistry, and have 5 years of teaching experience. As a trombonist at Lawrence University, I was the section leader for the Jazz Ensemble and the Symphony Orchestra. I also took courses in music theory and composition, both classical and jazz. I have also taken lessons in piano and guitar. Currently, I am focusing on jazz piano, and playing jazz jams around the Chicago area.

Geometry

I hold a Master of Science in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. I have 5 years of teaching experience as a tutor and a college teaching assistant.

I have helped students to learn and use geometry, which was important in the chemistry courses I have taught. I meet the student at their level of knowledge and build from there. In geometry, you use numbers, words, and pictures to draw conclusions about shapes, lengths, areas, volumes. I can help you apply apply your own spatial intuition to these problems. I teach in a conversational style, with questions, hints, and examples to guide you through the subject.

I would very much like to help you learn, understand, and succeed in geometry.

Guitar

I hold a Bachelor of Music from the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music. I teach beginning guitar lessons. My main instrument is the piano which I play at jazz jams around the Chicago area.

Music History

I hold a Bachelor of Music in Trombone Performance from the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music. I also hold degrees in chemistry, and have 5 years of teaching experience.

While at Lawrence University, I played Trombone in the Lawrence Symphony Orchestra, and the Lawrence University Jazz Ensemble. I have taken courses on general music history, as well as courses focusing on jazz, and on the string quartet.

I would be happy to guide you into the world of music history!

Music Theory

I hold a Bachelor of Music in Trombone Performance from the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music. I also hold degrees in chemistry, and have 5 years of teaching experience.

Music theory is a wonderful subject! Although it can seem dry, dispassionate, and boring at first, it is well worth the effort. The tools in music theory help you to make better music. The fun starts when you apply what you have learned to your own playing. I can work with you on both the technical side of music theory, and on the artistic side of using it to inform and improve your playing.

I would very much like to help you understand and enjoy music theory, and I wish you the best in your life in music!
