About Jennifer

"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." (Chinese Proverb)

Hello! I'm Jennifer, a lifelong Chicagoan, certified English teacher, and former journalist, and that beautiful Chinese proverb captures one of the most important goals of being a teacher and tutor: to help students of all ages and abilities build confidence, discover the joys of learning and get better grades and test scores.

I have ten years of teaching experience in the Chicago Public Schools and have taught everything from freshman English to journalism and AP English classes. I tutor students of all ages—from elementary school through college--in grammar, reading, writing, Spanish and ACT Prep (English and Reading).

I tailor lessons to meet students' individual learning need and style. Some students may want to see me model several examples before tackling a concept. Others may want to dive in, receive immediate feedback, and apply it to the specific task, problem, or exercise.

I have a bachelor’s degree with high distinction in English from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and, in 2006, I earned a Master’s in Teaching and Learning from DePaul University and have certification in AP English from Northwestern University.

I bring this knowledge and experience along with warmth, patience, focus, and rigor so that the students I tutor make wonderful progress and have fun doing it! I look forward to helping your child improve by leaps and bounds! Contact me to get started on the path to success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

Since 2006, I have been certified by the state of Illinois as being highly qualified to teach English at the middle school and high school levels. I have five years of experience teaching regular and honors writing. Besides my work experience, I graduated with High Distinction in English from the University of Illinois based on my work in honors seminars and a 25-page undergraduate essay. Two summers ago, I earned AP Language and Composition certification at Northwestern University's Summer Institute.

Grammar

My knowledge of grammar, syntax, vocabulary, and style have been developed over many years in the fields of journalism and education. Since 2006, I have been certified by the state of Illinois as being highly qualified to teach English at the middle school and high school levels. Prior to becoming an educator, I demonstrated an outstanding command of language working as an editor for numerous publications.

Proofreading

My knowledge of grammar, syntax, vocabulary, and style have been developed over many years in the fields of journalism and education. I am certified as a highly qualified middle school and high school English teacher.

Prior to becoming an educator, I worked as a reporter and features editor in journalism where I demonstrated an outstanding command of language. I have written for many publications including the Pioneer Press/SunTimes Network, Chicago Tribune, and the National Safety Council. To produce high-quality writing under tight deadlines, I had to have impeccable grammar knowledge and proofreading skills. Whether you're a middle school student writing a short story or a college student stressing over a term paper, let me put these skills to use for you. With a little editing, mediocre writing gets that wow factor.
