About Benjamin

I don't think there is much difference between teaching and learning. I think we learn best when teaching others, and I love teaching for the opportunities it affords for learning.

I hold a B.A. from St. John's College in Santa Fe, NM. The St. John's program is an all-required four year course of study centered around primary texts, delivered primarily in seminar-style discussions. Students at the college are required to study philosophy, literature, history, mathematics, economics, political theory, theology, biology, physics, music, chemistry, and languages. I have seldom met a subject I did not find interesting.

I have taught middle school English, Latin, and Mathematics for the past five years at schools in Phoenix, Arizona. I care passionately about coaching students into developing deep, transferable understandings of the subjects they study, and I emphasize thinking skills over rote memorization. I firmly believe that getting the "right answers" is not as important as learning to ask the right questions. I am on something of a mission to show students that math is for everyone, and that there is no such thing as a "math person."

Aside from my patience and willingness to try multiple approaches to a problem, I enjoy using my creativity and sense of humor when I teach; it is important to have ways to help students overcome their anxieties. While I am relaxed and jovial, I am also persistent; since the only way to really improve is to learn by doing, I try to keep my students busy rather than passive. I firmly desire for my students to develop to the point where they no longer need me.

I am flexible concerning both my schedule and venue. I am always willing to work around scheduling conflicts, but do require 48 hours notice of cancellation. I can tutor multiple students, but have a maximum of three students per session, and charge the full rate per student.

I will not bill for my services if my students are unsatisfied with the quality of my lessons.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Undergraduates at St.John's College study pure mathematics and the foundations of mathematical physics and astronomy. The curriculum seeks to give students an insight into the fundamental nature and intention of mathematics, as well as the structure of mathematical reasoning.

Classics

I have three years experience teaching Latin, a 700 on the Latin PRAXIS, and a minor in classical studies.
