About Michael

I am a research specialist and licensed history teacher with a B.A. in History and Secondary Education, and an endorsement in the social sciences. I am well prepared to help you with mastering the study of history, no matter what your needs. I know what it takes to write a good history paper, from high school essays to college level research, and I am very prepared to assist you and help you improve your writing skills. My primary interests include several areas of world history, including European, East Asian, and American histories. In the past I received an Early European Historical Scholar award for my research on the ancient druids of Ireland and Britain. I worked as a research assistant for a U.S. historian, performing archival research at the University of Chicago’s Special Collections Library. In addition, for the first half of 2014 I taught World Geography and History of the Holocaust at Holy Trinity High School. During that time I participated in a seminar run by the National Consortium for Teaching About Asia, which is offered through Indiana University. The seminar deepened my knowledge of Chinese/Japanese/Korean studies and I received a certificate from the program.

Currently I am a research/curriculum specialist for an online academic resource called Obscure Histories, where I research and write historical articles to be published on their website, as well as help provide curated searches for educators and researchers who are interested in going deeper into a topic. I also enjoy studying economics; particularly macroeconomics. I spend much time studying political development and economics from around the world, having done research on Morocco’s political development in the past. International relations and global cooperation also interest me and I participated in the American Model United Nations International Conference in the past.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have a B.A. degree in History and Education from Saint Xavier University. This prepared me well for teaching/tutoring American history after taking courses ranging from general to specific, which include U.S. history to 1865, U.S. History since 1865, Illinois History, Chicago Labor History, and my capstone senior seminar course. In addition, I worked as a research assistant for an American historian.
