About Angela

My name is Angela J. and I am currently a doctoral graduate student at Wheaton College. I completed by B.S. in Psychology from Loyola University Chicago. My tutoring career began in high school: I guided students at my church with their homework and helped them improve their standardized test scores as well as their grades overall. I mainly worked with primary school students during my high school career and then had the chance to work with both elementary and high school students during my college career.
Additionally, I was a Bible study teacher my freshman year of college and an Act tutor on the weekends. In college, I had a part-time job for Asian Human Services in the LEAF After-School Program as an after-school tutor, working with students from elementary through junior high and help them improve their reading skills, writing skills, as well as homework in all subjects.

I believe that as a tutor, it is my job to help students to be successful not only in schoolwork, but also in their lives. I am passionate about tutoring students and watching them grow and mature over a period of time. My expectations are generally high for my students as I challenge and push them to go the extra mile to be excellent in their studies. However, I also emphasize the importance of each student wanting to be excellent for himself/herself because without that inner motivation, I do not believe students can reach their full potential.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I was a youth teacher for 5 years and for 3 summers I taught Vacation Bible School at my home church and a few other locations in Northern Illinois and Florida for about 3 summers as well. In addition, I was a teacher for VBS in Guatemala for 4 years and was the Director for Guatemala missions where I was in charge of coming up with the itinerary and entire curriculum for a week's worth of VBS material in 2014. I was also a counselor and small group leader at retreats for a few years and generally follow a curriculum that my pastor provides me with or I find my own curriculum and get it approved by my pastor.

Flute

I have been playing the flute for about 15 years and took lessons for about 5 of those 15 years. I have also held leadership positions as a squad leader and section head for a couple years in high school. Additionally, I taught a couple students at my church on how to play the flute and how to make clearer tones when playing the flute. I tend to use similar tutoring methods that my private teacher used to teach me when I was younger. I generally start by teaching students how to play using the head joint to make clear, solid tones before adding the rest of the flute to teach them scales and articulation skills.
