I have always loved teaching children. The ability to see a child understand a concept that has been discouraging to them for so long is a wonderful feeling. I am in my fifth year as an elementary teacher on Chicago's south side. I've had the privilege to teach so many students in grades kindergarten through second grade. They've shown me that hard work pays off. I consider myself truly lucky to teach primary children because of their natural love of learning. I believe that if we don't help the student who need assistance at this young age, then we are hindering their future. I love teaching primary grades because you can see their learning taking place every day.
I received my undergrad degree from Indiana University - Bloomington. I recently went back to school to get my Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in reading. I have a soft spot for teaching reading and math, especially when I am able to work in small groups and identify the exact needs of a student. My teaching method is to let the student work while I observe so I can note how they solve problems. Then I work with them through those challenging portions and model what they need to do while they work with me. Slowly, I release the power back to them and they are doing it on their own with assistance only when needed. I have found this works very well with my students.
I am very flexible with scheduling and have a 5 hour cancellation policy. I am also flexible with the location of tutoring. The library or a local Starbucks is a great place for me.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping your child grow as a learner!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I currently teach second grade and have also taught first grade and kindergarten with a total of five years. I received my undergrad from Indiana University with a degree in Elementary Education. I recently received my Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in reading.
This is my fifth year teaching in the elementary grades. I have experience in kindergarten, first, and second grade. These three grades teach phonics heavily as it is a backbone to reading and writing. I have five years of experience teaching phonics and using it to teach students how to read.
