About Michael

Hello!

A graduate with honors from Creighton University, I studied Justice and Society, a combination of Theology and Sociology, in addition to Spanish and Art History. One of the typical comments I receive is that I am a very calm and patient person, able to work with people and to meet them where they are. I believe this has helped me while working with students on a one-on-one or group teaching basis.

While studying at Creighton University, as well as during the three years since graduating, I have tutored in several capacities. While at Creighton, my focus was on working with immigrants and refugees who were learning English. This often involved seeing where they were in their process of learning English and from there I would work one-on-one with grammar, vocabulary, and speaking.

After graduating I worked at a boys' home in Lima, Peru where, among several responsibilities, I tutored 14-16 year old boys. The main areas of focus were algebra, religion, and English (a class I also taught supplemental classes for during the evening study time). As I was working with 30 boys, and as we only had a limited amount of time to work on homework, my approach was to respond to the specific questions they may have had, let them work while paying close attention to those who were struggling.

What I hope to bring to tutoring sessions is a holistic approach to tutoring. I want to be able to meet the student where he/she is at, learn how the student best learns, and work in a way that is most effective for the student.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have worked with adolescent boys for a year and a half, re-enforcing elementary math skills so that we could progress to Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and Geometry lessons. I worked in a patient way, making sure they understood the material.

Chess

I have played chess for 12 years, starting in grade school. I have taught chess to students I have worked with, including some adolescents in Lima, Peru. They were able to pick it up really quickly and teach other boys in their class.

Elementary Math

I tutored Algebra, Pre-Algebra, and Geometry to 30 13-16 year-olds in Lima, Peru, often working to re-enforce elementary mathematics skills before moving into the more advanced math levels. Both in a group and one-on-one setting I was able to meet the students where they were and to work to address the areas they struggled with.

In addition, I worked with the boys in Lima with reading comprehension, focusing on being able to read the text while also understanding what they read.

I am very patient and I work to ensure that the students I work with not only know how to do something but why it is done.

Spanish

I have been using Spanish in professional settings for the last 3 years, using Spanish to translate documents and write articles, in addition to working at a boys' home in Lima, Peru. While in Lima I also tutored Algebra and Pre-Algebra, often times re-teaching and re-enforcing the lesson from their daily lesson.

My approach is to work with the student in a holistic way to learn how they best learn and to develop plans focusing on their learning style.
