About Bill

Hi! I'm a Chicago-based writing and sports tutor who is looking to help students get the most out of their talent or tap into talents they never even knew they had.

I'm a former journalist who has held jobs in digital advertising, public relations and interactive advertising. I'm currently working as a copywriter at a social media agency, but I'm looking to make an impact in people's lives on the side. My experience working with kids includes coaching high school and college speech teams. On the weekends, I help judge at high school speech tournaments. I can help your kids write a better college essay, improve their public speaking or nail that important term paper.

As for my sports experience, I played soccer and basketball throughout high school, and lacrosse in college. I was also an assistant coach for a men's college basketball program the past 3 seasons.

I believe in positive reinforcement and using the Socratic method to help that light bulb go off in a student's head. Students learn better with one-on-one instruction, so I believe there is real value in private tutoring.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Basketball

I played basketball in high school. I also covered it as a journalist. Most relevant, I served as an assistant men's basketball coach at a small college in Decatur, IL, from 1/2012 until 9/2014.

Lacrosse

I helped found my high school's first lacrosse team. That passion for the sport led me to play in college, where I was the freshman captain for the University of Missouri-Columbia. Since college, I've also played on a handful of men's teams. Though I've only observed a few practices, I believe my combination of coaching experience in other activities and playing experience means I could help a kid learn how to improve quickly.

Public Speaking

I was on one of the top high school speech teams in the state in high school, twice earning All-State honors. Since then, I've judged 5-10 high school and college speech tournaments every year. I've also served as an assistant coach on a high school speech team, and coached kids one-on-one at the high school and college levels.

Finally, I've attended a few public speaking seminars as part of my professional development when I was a media spokesman at a previous employer.
