About Malcolm

Hi I'm Malcolm,
I am a consultant for smart buildings and cities at an architecture/engineering/planning firm.
I studied architectural engineering at Penn State University (5-year program).

As far as qualifications go I was a tutor during my undergrad/master's coursework at Penn State. I was promoted to coordinator of the campus & online tutoring center (math & economics), which required me to hire and train new tutors. For 5 years I tutored every level of math from discrete math to differential equations (see subjects below). This was online, in-person group tutoring, and in-person 1-on-1. Throughout the semester I led 200+ student exam reviews for midterms and finals.

Now a little more about me..
I'm from NYC! However, I've been living/working in Chicago for 2 years.
Initially, I studied Architecture at Penn State and switched Architectural Engineering to get a better understanding of math and physics (which was more difficult than it seems).

The reason I did well is because architecture school taught me to focus on connecting information and focus on the whole--details that are important in math are also important in physics, engineering mechanics, and structural design. This keeps learning high level, conceptual, and easy to explain to others - after understanding that, the details just make sense.

Nonetheless, this approach to learning allowed me to pick up the material efficiently, catch up on engineering/math courses, and even tutor them during my enrollment.

I worked as a tutoring coordinator for Math and Economics at Penn State for 3 years. Here
Differential Equations - 2 years
Calculus 1, 2, & 3 (vector calc) - 4.5 years
Physics (mechanics, electromagnetism) - 4 years
Linear Algebra - 4 years
Additional math coursework (Algebra, Trigonometry, and Geometry) - 5 years
Engineering Mechanics - 4 years
Economics (micro) - 3 years

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Photoshop

I used Photoshop throughout architecture and architectural engineering school. This included formal Photoshop classes, development of renderings (even completely changing existing interior and exterior photos from daytime to nighttime for example), and other picture/document enhancements for presentation purposes. I have also done my own artwork using Photoshop and Illustrator for many years, and continue to use my Photoshop and Illustrator skills at work to this day.

Algebra 1

I tutored algebra and conducted 200+ student exam reviews for 5 years (2010-2015) at Penn State. In addition, I was a coordinator for the campus & online tutoring center and was required to hire and train new algebra tutors. Upon graduation (2015) I passed the fundamentals of engineering licensure examination (FE exam), which has a large focus in basic and higher level maths. Lastly, I tested out of algebra at Penn State.

Algebra 2

I tutored multiple levels of algebra and conducted 200+ student exam reviews for 5 years (2010-2015) at Penn State.

Architecture

I have a degree in Architectural Engineering. I have multiple master's courses in Architectural Engineering and a minor in Architecture Studies. I studied abroad at Tsinghua university and Hong Kong University - Architecture, construction, and urban planning.

Calculus

I tutored calculus and conducted 200+ student exam reviews for 4.5 years (2010 to 2015) at Penn State. In addition, I was a coordinator for the campus & online tutoring center and was required to hire and train new math and econ tutors. Upon graduation (2015) I passed the fundamentals of engineering licensure examination (FE exam), which has a large focus on calculus and differential equations. Lastly, I passed calculus I, II, & III (vector calculus) at Penn State with an "A" grade.

Differential Equations

I tutored differential equations and conducted 200+ student exam reviews for two years (2013-2015) at Penn State. In addition, I was a coordinator for the campus & online tutoring center and was required to hire and train new differential equations tutors. Upon graduation (2015) I passed the fundamentals of engineering licensure examination (FE exam), which has a large focus on calculus and differential equations. Lastly, I passed differential equations at Penn State with an "A" grade.

Linear Algebra

I tutored linear algebra and conducted 200+ student exam reviews for 3.5 years (2011-2015) at Penn State. In addition, I was a coordinator for the campus & online tutoring center and was required to hire and train new linear algebra tutors. Upon graduation (2015) I passed the fundamentals of engineering licensure examination (FE exam), which has a large focus on calculus and linear algebra. Lastly, I passed linear algebra at Penn State with an "A" grade.

Precalculus

I tutored calculus and precalc and conducted 200+ student exam reviews for 4.5 years (2010-2015) at Penn State. In addition, I was a coordinator for the campus & online tutoring center and was required to hire and train new math and econ tutors. Upon graduation (2015) I passed the fundamentals of engineering licensure examination (FE exam), which has a large focus on calculus and differential equations. Lastly, I tested out of precalculus at Penn State.

Trigonometry

I tutored trigonometry and conducted 200+ student exam reviews for 5 years (2010-2015) at Penn State. In addition, I was a coordinator for the campus & online tutoring center and was required to hire and train new trigonometry tutors. Upon graduation (2015) I passed the fundamentals of engineering licensure examination (FE exam), which has a large focus in basic and higher level maths.
