About Bernard

I taught German and Spanish for 9 years in public and private high schools and middle schools in the Chicago area. To become fluent I spent one year in Germany and a summer in Barcelona, Spain learning Spanish. In recent years, I have traveled in Mexico, Argentina, Costa Rica, Venezuela and other Spanish speaking countries. This experience gives me the breadth of Spanish language and culture.

Over the past few years I have developed a love of Chicago history and culture and have worked as a volunteer docent (interpreter) at the Chicago History Museum where I give tours and work with students in the galleries. I also lead bus, walking, and "L" tours in the city on Brown and Green Lines. I have also developed tours including Bronzeville and Black Chicago, Hyde Park and Woodlawn, and other highlights of Chicago tours. Over the past few years I have written several books about Chicago neighborhoods and Chicago history as well as children's books.

If you are looking for help with writing, publishing or developing your writing style, I'm your guy.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Grammar

I have written and published 8 books and work for an educational publishing company that publishes grammar and writing materials for grades K-8. I have multiple resources to help you to improve your grammar, usage and mechanics in English.

Handwriting

For the past 10 years I have worked as a regional sales manager and sales representative for Zaner-Bloser. Our principal product is handwriting instruction. I have taken and passed the Z-B Handwriting Correspondence course twice.

Social Studies

My minor at the University of Illinois was in history, but what really qualifies me to tutor in history is the education I have received as a volunteer docent (interpreter) at the Chicago History Museum. Our studies have focused on specific topics in Chicago history, including the four principal events symbolized by the red stars on the Chicago flag as well as American history including the American Revolution and the Civil War.

Spelling

I work for the language arts company that publishes the most widely used spelling curriculum, Spelling Connections from Zaner-Bloser. I will share these materials with your son.

Tennis

I have played tennis for 25 years and continue to take lessons at level 5 weekly at a Chicago Park District club. I play both singles and doubles and participate occasionally in league play. My teacher teaches us drills for improving footwork, volleys, overheads, serves, and ground strokes. I love tennis and would love to help young people to improve.
