Throughout high school and college I had various experiences with education—from teaching reading at the Polo Grounds Community Center, to one-on-one tutoring, to running an arts program at two local elementary schools. I then accepted a job teaching 3rd and 4th grade at the Education Achievement Authority’s Bethune Elementary/Middle School in Detroit, MI, beginning in August 2012. I remained in this role for two years, and then spent one year writing curriculum for an elementary school computerized system. Now, I'm starting my second year as a PhD student in Northwestern's sociology department, where I study various topics at the intersection of education and culture.
As an elementary school teacher I was able to develop my teaching and tutoring ability—I have extensive experience individualizing content for students and creating learning plans for students who are struggling to master material. I am very familiar with the common core standards K-5, and the ELA standards K-12. In addition to these experiences with elementary education, I have experience in copy editing and proofreading from working at my college newspaper as a copy editor for four years. I studied English and writing in college, and graduated with a major GPA of 3.85 and an overall GPA of 3.71. I scored a 5 on the literature AP, and an 800 on the literature SAT II. I scored a 760 on the reading section of the SAT. I am ready and able to tutor English, literature, and writing for any age or skill level. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have two years of experience teaching elementary school. I taught 3rd and 4th grade, but I worked with students ranging from a kindergarten to 6th grade level in both reading and math. I designed my own curriculum both years, and have experience individualizing work for specific students.
