About Adam

I come from a family of educators who taught me growing up that what you do for yourself is finite. However, what you do for others has the capability to live on continuously. How exciting! This is why I enjoy teaching so much. I also very much enjoy witnessing first hand the growth students undergo, even in very short periods of time, when they dedicate themselves! I am a senior student on pace to graduate summa cum laude in May while holding numerous positions including: teacher's assistant at an elementary school, program director at financially the world's largest municipal park district, and cancer researcher as part of the liver pathology team at University of Illinois Hospital. I am now working within Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine on another cancer study. Holding these positions while maintaining strong academic performance has required dedication, effective time management, and enthusiasm! I hope to have the pleasure of helping you improve your grades, test scores, communication skills, or whatever the case by employing these skills during our sessions.

As an econ/pre-med student, I specialize in assisting with economics (my favorite), chemistry, biology, and math. I also do proofreading and public speaking. If you have questions about specific classes please feel free to ask. My approach is a very patient one, and I stress investment in the subject by both myself and you. I aim to create a comfortable environment where questions can flow freely, and active learning is paramount. I also fancy tying questions into everyday situations that one might find themselves in! I find that when there is practical context to complex problems we are more likely to learn and remember pertinent information. My goal every session is to make sure that not only are problems solved, but that the fundamental concepts, processes, and rationale behind said problems have been ingrained. After all, the less you see of me the better! I also stress the ability to find confidence. Confidence is incredibly important in our day to day lives, and it is no different when you are trying to learn something new. The caveat being that only with practice and persistence comes true confidence!

I am very flexible with time in the late afternoon/evening. I prefer to host tutoring sessions in my quiet Logan Square apartment, but I am willing to make any arrangement which would make you most comfortable (on-campus, at a library, Starbucks, etc.). I require a 2-hour cancellation notice which I believe is pretty flexible and can offer make up classes on weekends. However, the sooner you let me know you cannot make it the better! Thank you for being so considerate!

I cannot wait to hear from you, and I am excited to help you reach all of your academic goals. You are capable of great success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Before deciding on a career in medicine, I was on the path to become a college math professor. Algebra is fun because it is straightforward and logical. Once you understand the fundamentals, you will be surprised at how much you can do! I have never received less than an "A" in any algebra course and have tutored everything from brilliant 5th graders to struggling college students!

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is often much more challenging for students. However, the introduction of the graphing calculator I think makes the subject much more approachable than many give it credit for. I have tutored this subject in the past with students finding great success; often times I have seen students jump two letter grades. Whether it is a system of equations, functions, logarithms, quadratics or rational expressions, let us find your success in this subject together!

Biology

My aspirations to be a surgeon has provided me with loads of biology coursework; this has definitely prepared me to help others with biology! I have never received a letter grade less than an "A" and have tutored students in biology throughout every stage of my academic career. I have also worked as part of a liver and colorectal cancer research team. That being said, I am capable of bringing interesting practical connections/applications to our biology tutoring sessions.

Economics

The subject that gets me the most excited! It is why I am pursuing a dual M.D./MBA degree as opposed to the standard M.D. Economics is my major and I currently hold a perfect 4.0 GPA within it. I have been lucky enough to present research at places like Illinois Economic Association, The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, and have even been invited to national competitions because of my economic prowess! I have tutored dozens of students; whether it be intro, intermediate, advanced, or econometrics, I can definitely help!

Elementary Math

I have worked with elementary-aged students for the last six years. Math is a subject that I very much enjoy tutoring elementary school children in because they become vastly more powerful learners once they master just the fundamentals. It also amazing to see the excitement it brings them once they see they are capable of progressing so quickly. With my enthusiasm and proper guidance I can ensure that your elementary student will be a math whiz in no time!

Organic Chemistry

As an aspiring medical student, I was required to take Organic Chemistry for 2 semesters. I received an "A" both semesters and have tutored Organic Chemistry 1 and 2 for dozens of struggling students. Electron Pushing Mechanisms are my favorite because once you understand those, Organic Chemistry becomes so much more easy! Organic Chemistry is difficult at first because it is like learning a new language, but I would be happy to help you gain a grasp of this language and help you achieve that high grade you are looking for!

Proofreading

Writing is the first subject I began to help others with. It is an incredibly valuable skill which can provide SO many opportunities if done well. I have tutored others within the writing centers of the City Colleges of Chicago, University of Illinois at Chicago, and have edited innumerable essays from college students. I am also in the process of having a scientific paper published. Creative writing, scientific writing, or simply helping a grammar/high school student complete essays are all things I would love to assist with.

Reading

The importance of reading cannot be overstated; I have especially discovered this during my college years. Whether it be of the sports section of the newspaper, textbooks, fantasy novels, sci-fi adaptations, or comics, reading is paramount. I stress this to all of the young people I encounter day-to-day. I have tutored reading from kindergartners to high school juniors. I emphasize focus on, investment in, and comprehension of the topic at hand. Many of the passages students encounter on standardized exams do not consist of the most enthralling subject matter, however, we can find ways to make them interesting once critical information is obtained from the passage!
