Millikin University (Applied Mathematics)
Illinois Institute of Technology - 2nd Bachelor's (Other)
I have been tutoring on some level since I was a sophomore at Millikin University in the fall of 2009 where I worked in the University Math Center. There, I learned to tutor both traditional college students and adult students on anything from basic algebra to Calculus and beyond. I also had private tutoring jobs for high school students while at college. Upon graduation, I worked as an Adult Educator & Teacher's Aide for my local GED preparation class and Alternative Center for Education (ACE), respectively. Both of these positions required much patience and a wide variety of knowledge. The students at ACE, who had been removed from their home school for poor behavior, ranged from 6th-12th grade and I would tutor them in Math both individually and as a group. As an Adult Educator, I had students aged 16-60+ and we covered subjects including Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading, and Writing. While tutoring can be frustrating at times and I can come off as hard-nosed, I love doing it. I do not have all the answers all the time so my tutoring experiences have often involved a bit of re-teaching myself, but I can assure you, together will find the solution. I say solution because that is what teaching is about, not just supplying the answer, but providing a method for finding it. Which is why I believe helping someone understand a problem or topic they cannot grasp is one of the most rewarding experiences. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
