I am a University of Oxford (UK) graduate student and University of Michigan medical student and have scored in the 99th percentile on the MCAT and 98th percentile on the SAT. As an undergraduate at the University of Notre Dame, I studied physics, chemistry, and math all at a high level. I spent a year as a middle school and high school science teacher before beginning medical school. Part of my duties included working with students one-on-one and in very small group settings to help keep them on track. Over the years I have also worked as a science tutor for college students.
Students and I work together to identify areas of particular difficulty. Then, in my teaching I focus on presenting fundamental concepts in creative ways as I believe this foundation is essential in order to master a subject. We then work through problems to apply these concepts and enhance problem-solving skills. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I received a 38 on the MCAT (99th percentile). Physical Sciences: 14/15 (99.8th percentile); Verbal Reasoning: 13/15 (99.5th percentile); Biological Sciences 11/15 (89th percentile). This score was a major reason why I was offered scholarships to a number of top medical schools.
My tutoring method focuses on addressing areas of weakness by reviewing fundamental concepts and enhancing general problem solving skills. We will spend time refining a studying strategy but will spend most of our time going over practice problems. Successful performance on the MCAT involves a number of different skills that we will discuss and refine through working through these problems.
