I am a classically trained guitarist whose mission is to help my students reach their goals while inspiring a love and passion for music. Never picked up a guitar before? No problem! You’ll be playing your favorite songs in no time. Been playing for years but need a little help overcoming that next hurdle? Great! You’ll be playing better and with more confidence than ever before. In order to truly improve you need determination and dedication, and that’s why I try to keep things fun and inspired from the very first lesson.

I first picked up guitar in 7th grade and never put it down afterward. I took lessons throughout high school and eventually decided to pursue music in college. I received my Bachelor of Music in Recording Technology and my Master of Music in Classical Guitar Performance from Ball State University. While studying I held the Classical Guitar Graduate Assistantship. My responsibilities included instructing individual undergraduate students in proper classical guitar technique, history of the instrument, and musical expression through etudes and repertoire in preparation for performances. I also directed small classical guitar ensembles as part my of duties.

After receiving my degrees I moved to Chicago and in addition to my own private lessons, I am also currently a member of the guitar faculty at the Merit School of Music in Chicago and Sherwood Community Music School at Columbia University. I instruct private and group classical guitar classes with both schools. Our goal is to expand students’ personal and educational growth by cultivating a strong work ethic, effective listening, teamwork, and self-confidence. We develop each student’s musical potential by improving their musical knowledge, skill, and instrumental technique. As an Instructor I instill a strong understanding of the fundamentals of classical guitar and music as a discipline.

When I teach, I like to begin with basic techniques such as simple note production, good tone production, slur execution, etc. Depending on the student’s skill level, I like to move onto more advanced techniques such as the barre, rasgueado, natural and artificial harmonics, or whatever the music we're working on might need. I think it is important to develop reading skills for traditional music notation with an emphasis on phrasing and musicality, and offer guidance in the development of the skills necessary to execute guitar techniques while incorporating basic to advanced music theory knowledge to understanding the guitar.

While my primary focus has been Classical Guitar, I understand that each person has their own goals. As a private instructor, I make my goal the student's goal and create lesson plans tailored to the individual student’s needs and desires. Whether you're trying to pursue music at the collegiate level or just learn a few of your favorite songs, I'll be sure to help you get here!

Music History

Music History

While studying at Ball State University I was required to take a number of music history courses for my degrees. The courses covered the span of western music from Gregorian Chant to modern music. One course covered Gregorian Chant to the end of the Baroque period. Another from the end of the Baroque to now. I also took a course on the history of opera. All of theses courses had an emphasis of the compositional style of the composers and placed them within a societal and geographical context.

Music

General Music,

General Music

I completed a 4 year Bachelor of Music degree and 2 year master's degree in performance from Ball State University. While there I took courses in music theory, music history, piano, and guitar. I also perform regularly.

Guitar

I've been a guitarist for over 14 years. My Bachelors degree is in Recording Technology and my Masters is in Classical Guitar performance. I also held the Classical Guitar Graduate Assistantship and taught between 11 and 14 students while also teaching at least 3 classical guitar ensembles per semester. Since I moved to Chicago in 2014 I have performed around the city, teach privately, and teach for the Merit School of Music. With all of my students I strive to keep them engaged and having fun for every moment.

Music Theory

While at Ball State University I studied Music Theory of different musical eras. 18th Century Counterpoint, 20th Century Counterpoint, and 20th Century Theory are to name a few. These studies allow me to shed a structural light on the harmony and progression of the music my students have worked with.

Knowledgeable, patient and fun

Paul is definitely serious about teaching the right technique from the start. Detailed oriented, dedicated, motivating and empathetic. I went to my first class afraid of not having what it takes to learn. I came out of the class feeling capable, excited and looking forward to practice and the next lesson.

Great tutor

I am a mature age guitar learner and I have just started with Paul. He is very knowledgeable, great to work with and I feel he can definitely help me become proficient on the guitar!

Patient, flexible and extremely knowledgeable.

I have been "playing" guitar for 10 years but never actually learned the guitar. Paul was able to quickly discern what I already knew and what I needed to work on to get where I wanted to be. His lessons have been flexible, both in content and scheduling. Every time we have a session, I feel excited I've learned something new and confident that I'm on the right path. Musicians of any level would benefit from lessons with Paul!

Another valuable session

We went over last week's assignments, including the chromatic scale, C Major Scale, C Major chords, and strumming. We added on variations on the chromatic scale, with an emphasis on playing the original faster and more precisely. I am still struggling with hammer-on's, but Paul was very supportive. We're finally getting through the strum pattern on the song I started with – Fake Plastic Trees – and I'm realizing how much easier it is to play all the way through after we've been working on individual components of my technique.

Patient, Thoughtful, Intelligent Teacher

I recommend Paul to anyone with an eagerness to learn anything about music. He responds quickly and professionally and is prompt come lesson time. He was also flexible in scheduling our first lesson. I particularly appreciated his inquisitive approach when I didn't understanding something. He remained focused and on task since I frequently would go off topic. Music Theory is extremely complicated to learn, yet Paul finally helped me turn the complex into something I can finally understand.

Patient, knowledgeable, and able to teach kids easily

My children are learning acoustic guitar and now electric guitar with Paul W. He is the best. Most importantly, he is teaching correct technique, note reading, and adjusts teaching style to my two kids (one is a beginner, the other more experienced). I highly recommend Paul W. to anyone needing an instructor.
