About Jenna

I am currently a special education teacher teaching within the Chicago Public Schools. I have an M.Ed in Special Education, and a bachelor's degree in English. I am considered highly qualified in a number of subject areas. I am also qualified to teach students with diverse learning needs and learning styles. I am also an expert in reading development, and I can adapt to any learners' specific needs. I am extremely patient, and love to teach. Since a lot of my students also have behavioral difficulties, I find that I know how to connect with them in ways that help them find learning fun, useful, and applicable to their lives. I consider myself a life-long learner, am extremely knowledgeable in many subject areas, am an avid reader, and keep abreast of research-based teaching practices. I can also test students with informal reading inventories, and other methods in order to pinpoint exactly the student needs. I embrace all differences, and know (and have seen first hand) that EVERYONE, regardless of background, supposed deficit, disability, or reluctancy, can and will learn with individualized teaching methods. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Phonics

I have a masters degree in Special Education, which included courses in reading development, specifically phonics and the teaching of phonics. I teach phonics everyday in my current position as a special education teacher. I am currently a special education teacher. I hold an LBS I as well as a secondary level English endorsement. I have been teaching special education in the Chicago Public Schools for three years. I am familiar with thirteen disability categories, learning styles, and learning differences. I am also familiar with IEP development. I have taken courses that focus specifically on children's reading development, including phonics.
