I have been teaching and tutoring in a variety of settings for the past 7 years. I have worked with elementary through high school students as an in-school tutor, as a private tutor, and as a teacher within a homeschool collective. Much of this has been tutoring math (elementary math through calculus), but I have also taught and tutored English/Language Arts, history, and physics.
My goal in tutoring is to ensure that students thoroughly understand the material while making it an enjoyable experience. I always strive to understand a student's thinking so that I can directly address the root of any misconceptions. This also ensures that we are working at the exact level that is right for the student, and I will move forward only when the student is ready. I am always very patient when working with students and will explain a concept in as many different ways as necessary until it makes sense. I have found that anyone can learn and understand anything as long as it is presented in the right way, but the right way is different for different people.
I also strive to be continuously learning and am always open to feedback from both students and parents.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I played baseball for 8 years in Greenwich Village Little League, playing during the regular spring season, on summer tournament teams, and during fall ball. I also served as a pitching coach for younger teams, and I umpired games. I was a coach for a summer youth team (ages 9-12) in Grahamsville, NY.
I spent a year teaching Language Arts to a 6th grade homeschooled student. When I first started working with him, he was a non-reader. By the end of the year, he was reading at about a 2nd grade level. In college, I spent 2 1/2 years tutoring in local elementary school classrooms (grades 3-5). Two of those years, I was working through the program America Reads and also participated in bi-weekly trainings and workshops on tutoring and working with elementary school students. The additional semester I worked in the elementary schools was through a class I took called Practicum in Tutoring, which consisted of working as a tutor while also taking a class on tutoring pedagogy.
I have been practicing Tae Kwon Do with the World Martial Arts Association for the past 20 years. I am currently a 3rd degree black belt. I helped to teach classes for 11 years, and I have been running my own classes for the past four years.
This past year, I taught 6th and 7th grade math to two homeschooled students. I have also tutored many high school students in remedial prealgebra skills. During college I took a class, Teaching & Tutoring Quantitative Skills, that focused on fully understanding and being able to explain math concepts, particularly prealgebra skills.
In high school, I played on my high school varsity softball team for all four years and played on fall and spring teams through Greenwich Village Little League. I also umpired Little League softball games and was an assistant coach for the Little League team once I aged out of it. I continued to play in college, playing all four years on the varsity team for Oberlin College (Division III). During this time, I also assisted in running softball clinics that the team offered to elementary and middle school-aged softball players.
