About Coltan

If you are needing help with science courses (biology, chemistry, physical science, etc.), you've come to the right place! I've had extensive coursework in the sciences, and have a passion for the subject. I currently teach 3 general biology labs at UCO as well as tutor in biology, chemistry, and writing. Along with the science courses, I could help with lower level math courses, up to algebra and statistics. I really have a knack for explaining difficult concepts in a clear manner, which is often the difficulty in science classes.

My undergraduate thesis was an 84 page research paper of which the aims as to break down the complex topic of stress in a way that it could be easily communicated to and understood by anyone. It was an exercise not only in research, but in public education. Thus, I would certainly be willing to help out with paper writing and/or editing. Fortunately, my undergraduate training was very interdisciplinary. I have experience in social science and humanities classes, such as philosophy, anthropology, english, and photography, and would be willing to tutor in any of these subjects as well.

I would be happy to meet wherever is best for the student/parent - your place, my place, Starbucks, a bookstore, etc. My only requirement is that it is within 20 miles of my location. This would serve most of the OKC and Edmond area, extending to a few suburbs outside this area as well.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I graduated in 2014 with a BA in anthropology with honors. I also maintained a 4.0 GPA in my anthropology courses. I've taken many cultural anthropology classes, have an interest in linguistics, and am en route to becoming a bioarchaeologist, combining the final two subfields of anthropology - archaeology and physical anthropology. I have a very holistic understanding of the subject as well as a passion for it.

I have taken college and graduate-level chemistry courses. I have tutored in chemistry for several years through university tutoring programs. I can tutor general chemistry 1 and 2, which are the two most common needs in chemistry tutoring.

I have taken, and excelled at, college courses in genetics. This includes a senior level genetics course. My masters degree that I am currently completing has a heavy focus on genetics (mostly DNA fingerprinting). Additionally, my masters thesis involves the genetic sequencing of an Egyptian mummy.

Genetics combines many aspects of science. When tutoring, I make sure the foundational sciences and how they work are understood, as this is essential to really understanding genetics. I am proficient in molecular and cellular techniques and concepts that are fundamental to understanding - and teaching - genetics concepts.

I have taken a college level logic class, and performed very well. This class included aspects of word arguments and symbolic logic, including the creation of novel arguments in symbolic form. I have experience translating symbolic logic to everyday language and visa versa. Additionally, my science background gives me a firm foothold in the concepts in logic.

When tutoring, I would ensure that the student understands the fundamentals of arguments and how each argument is formulated, including aspects of validity and cogency. Logic is a very stepwise subject, so it is important that the student understands each part of an argument and how it contributes or can be manipulated in the bigger picture.

I have taken, and excelled at, both high school and college level zoology courses. I am very up to date on zoological knowledge writ large. I also have experience in insect collections, which are common to most zoology courses in both high school and college level courses. My undergraduate minors were in biology and natural science, so I have a strong background in the sciences related to zoology, including genetics, biochemistry, and evolution.

Zoology is a very broad field, so, when tutoring, I would ensure that the student understands how and why each aspect is related to another. I would ensure that the phylogenetic tree is well understand, as it has powerful explanatory power when it comes to the structure and function of different organisms.
